In 1973 the Cork footballers won the senior All Ireland Championship. On the back of that, a fledgeling Cork band changed their name to honour the occasion. The Champions were born.
On this weeks edition of “Stories from Cork and Beyond” John Greene looks back on a visit to Ballycotton to meet “Gina”, lead singer with the band as they celebrate 50 years as one of irelands top bands “The Champions”.
Gina's mother died suddenly at the age of fifty leaving behind ten young kids.
As Gina was the oldest, she became the Matriarch to her 9 siblings. She heard her first single with the band on radio as she was down on her knees washing the kitchen floor.
We hear about her battle with post natal depression
And.... love conquers all as Gina and lead guitarist Pat Walshe break a strict rule with the band.

The Champions - Gina's story - the first of a two part programme begins this week on “Stories from Cork and Beyond” on Sunday evening on CUH fm Hospital Radio
Join John Greene between 4:00/6:00pm

On this week's edition of “Stories From Cork and Beyond”, we conclude our two part programme on the Butter Road and the man who built it..
In it's hey day, the Cork Butter Market set the price of butter worldwide every morning at 11:30am, such was its importance.
However failing to keep in step with Worldwide changes in the industry, its demise wasnt far off.
Rachel Foley of “Ancestors from Ireland” attempts to find out what happened to roadbuilder John Murphy, but reckons he was far too clever to end up in debtors prison
And ...... We get a tour of the “Butter Market Museum”
So Join John Greene for “Stories from Cork and Beyond” this Sunday evening between 4:00/6:00pm on

In 1741, Road builder John Murphy from Castleisland was commissioned by the local Gentry to build a road between Killarney and Cork.
The road had to be on a straight line all the way and include 6 large bridges and 15 smaller ones.
Murphy would have to provide the money himself and was assured that he would recoup his investment by means of tolls.
The road, which was an enormous undertaking was successful, but Murphy found himself deep in debt to the tune of 4,000 pounds - around 1 million in today's money.
On this week's edition of “Stories from Cork and Beyond”, John Greene travels on what has since become The Cork Butter Road.
He works on the theory that Murphy may have ended up in Debtors Prison and there's a visit to the Butter Museum under Cork's Shandon Bells.
