Cork University Hospital Emergency Medicine Department A&E The Emergency Department (ED) at Cork University Hospital (CUH) is unique in that it is the only Level 1 Trauma centre in the country.

It is operational 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The new department opened in April 2005 and approximately sixty thousand patients pass through the emergency department every year, making it one of the busiest emergency departments in the country. The department is divided into sections, based on the types of injury or illness with which the patients present. There are

● Minor Injuries Treatment area (including a dedicated Paediatric Treatment area)

● Major Injuries Treatment area – with 12 cubicles

● Resuscitation area – with 4 bays
where life threatening injuries and illnesses are dealt with

● Clinical Decision Unit – with 12 Beds/trolleys
Its sole use is for ED patients who require a short period of observation or treatment, typically for a maximum of 24 hours.
