How to effectively rehab a sprained ankle!
Sprained ankles can be an absolute nightmare for anyone involved in sports, so how can we rehab this injury effectively to return to sport or simply back to day to day movement.
Unfortunately for me I rolled my ankle pretty badly during the week getting out of the van and stepping into a drain. Easily done!
The injury was followed with immediate pain (a 9 out of a 10), some swelling, lack of movement and difficulty weight baring.
So here is what I did post injury. I decide to avoid any antiflammatory medication and ice as both can slow down the healing process, remember inflammation is the bodies natural healing and protective mechanism. Anti inflammatories will reduce inflammation but inflammation is part of the process, over icing will cause a restriction in blood flow to the area by constricting blood vessels to and from the affected area, in turn reducing the bodies ability to remove waste products from the injured site.
Instead I took a fairly hands on approach using the rockblades to work on the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is a very superficial system so I could work quite shallow, using the rockblade like a squege. The goal here was to introduce venous and lymphatic return.
Together with the rockblades I introduce a tens machine to act as a pump by stimulating the muscle internally. The lymphatic system relies on the muscle contraction to create a reverse pressure to return the lymph to the core. The tens machine also doubles as pain relief, in this area working on the peroneus muscle, a muscle the often becomes stretched and inhibited during ankle sprains.
Using the kinesiology Tape To weave around the ankle, spacing out the fingers to allow for maximum coverage of the skin. This will help lift the underlying tissues, again allowing for lymphatic drainage from the area.
The last solid piece of kt tape acts as a stirrup, this will allow for some pain mitigation via sensory input. Will it support the ankle, no, but it will provide a sense of safety and security.
