APC Microbiome Ireland APC Microbiome Ireland is a world leading research centre investigating the microbiome and its effect on human, animal and planetary health.

The Centre/project is funded by Taighde Éireann – Research Ireland, formerly Science Foundation Ireland. The APC Microbiome Institute, (http://apc.ucc.ie ) is a research centre funded by Science Foundation Ireland and industry partners. The APC Microbiome Institute, a partnership between University College Cork, Teagasc, the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority, and the Cork Institute of Technology, focuses on research in gastrointestinal health. Pharmabiotic is a neologism devised by the APC Microbiome Institute to represent any material (including molecules and microbes) originating from the gut ecosystem that can be exploited for a health benefit, and includes probiotics, prebiotics, metabolites, and potential new anti-microbials and anti-inflammatories. The independent international ratings agency Thomson Reuters Science Watch global analysis, recently ranked University College Cork at number 2 in the world for probiotics research, due primarily to publications from researchers in the APC Microbiome Institute (http://sciencewatch.com/ana/st/probiotics/institution/).

Our Story

APC Microbiome Ireland, (http://apc.ucc.ie ) is a flagship Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Research Centre funded by SFI and industry partners. APC Microbiome Ireland, a partnership between University College Cork, Teagasc, the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority, and the Cork Institute of Technology, explores the role of the microbiome in health and disease. Over the last 15 years, the APC has established itself as a global leader global in microbiome research, with several landmark discoveries and over 2000 research articles in peer-reviewed journals, generating many journal covers and associated editorials. In an independent bibliometric review of APC peer-reviewed publications, APC ranked #4 for microbiome research globally, and was ranked #1 for probiotic research and bacteriocin research and #5 for gut related diseases. In the last 5 years competitive research funding won from both national and international funding agencies has totalled over €70 million, with an additional €25 million from industry collaborations, and the APC has spun out 3 companies that now employ 40 researchers.
