Parents often ask what "magic" we are doing to help baby fall fast asleep during a treatment.
The fact is there is no magic. Cranial Osteopaths have 5 years university training in human anatomy and nervous system function and are highly skilled in finding where tension is being held.
When we find tension in a newborn system it is usually for a reason.
For example an instrumental birth (forceps/vacuum)
A stressful birth (very long or very quick)
An 'eventful birth' (emergency C-section or cord around the neck for example)
Undiagnosed torticollis or tongue tie.
So what are we doing when baby falls asleep during treatment.
We provide gentle techniques to muscles at the cranial base, increasing mobility, opening up motion of the rib cage. This allows for drainage of mucous from the sinuses reducing pressure. Breathing becomes deeper which relaxes the central nervous system and baby relaxes into a deep sleep. All of this brings relaxation and comfort musculo-skeletally, digestive and neurally.
This recovery is vital to a babies early neural development. If we can teach the brain and nervous system what it is to destress and relax, it remembers the feeling and seeks this sensation out in times of stress as the system ages. This is why early cranial osteopathy is so important to newborn health and development.
A wonderful learning tool for the newborn brain. And brings a happy family household too.
