This device for stroke prevention (Amplatzer Amulet from Abbott) has been available for patients in the Bon Secours Hospital, Cork for over a year now. It is now undergoing a large randomized controlled trial in the United States.

Today, we announced that the FDA has approved a first-of-its-kind trial that could lead to a new therapy option for people at risk of stroke, who have previously been limited to a lifetime of blood thinner medication. Our global, multicenter CATALYST trial will compare the effectiveness of Abbott’s Amplatzer Amulet device, which is currently investigational in the U.S., to modern versions of anticoagulants (NOACs) in lowering the risk of stroke for people with atrial fibrillation, a condition with a projected prevalence rate of 12.1 million by 2030 in the U.S. alone. With the results of the trial, we’re hoping to change clinical practice by eliminating this lifetime need for blood thinners for these patients.
