My coaching project started around this time (in my head at least) last year.
Title: A preliminary examination into improving the performance of triathletes using a non-directive, athlete-centred approach to goal setting.
The operative words here are 'non-directive'!!
My goal was (and is) to help facilitate athletes by promoting their autonomy, their competence, and how they can relate to their intrinsic goals (Self Determination Theory).
Athlete agency and self efficacy was inspired by establishing personalised areas of focus within the coaching sessions.
Athletes' strengths were recognised using tools garnered from Positive Psychology.
I used a well-known method of 'walk and talk' coaching sessions, which helped inspire deeper thought and often some deeper intrinsic goals that aren't often spoken out loud.
The results from the athletes that completed the study were improved performance and higher engagement in the training process.
This style of coaching (non-directive and athlete-centred)inspires intrinsic motivation in athletes, which has been shown to improve health and performance (Deci and Ryan, 2008)
Since I finished the project, the work hasn't stopped, it's been a great success and is receiving great interest.
I want to open up this style of coaching to all athletes and goal setters, and anyone looking for change !
DM me if you're interested.
