University Teaching Award for NUIG senior lecturer based at Letterkenny Medical Academy.

Dr Seamus McGuire was recently conferred with a 2013 President's Award for Teaching Excellence by Dr Jim Browne, President of NUI Galway at the winter medical conferring ceremony.

These prestigious awards recognise the efforts of NUI Galway academic staff to ensure that students receive the highest quality learning experience. Four awards are given each year, chosen from across all NUIG faculties. In 2013, the judging panel considered 34 nominations (27 individual, 7 group), each demonstrating teaching excellence. The nomination process is initiated by students, based on detailed evaluation of their lecturers.

Dr McGuire, formerly a consultant Paediatrician at Letterkenny General Hospital, is currently a senior lecturer in Paediatrics based at Letterkenny Medical Academy. He is a medical graduate of NUI Galway and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland. He completed his postgraduate training in Paediatrics at Our Lady's Children's Hospital in Crumlin, Dublin and The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.

Dr McGuire believes that medical students learn most effectively when they are integrated into the clinical team during their Paediatrics module, participating actively and immersing themselves in departmental activities while under close supervision and guidance of senior clinical staff. The small group learning approach at Letterkenny Medical Academy is ideal, he believes, for providing a high-standard of medical education in a real clinical setting.
