👓 Are short-sighted parents more likely to have short-sighted children?

If you’re a parent with myopia (short sight), there’s a higher chance your child may develop it too. Genetics play a big role in how our eyes grow, and research shows that children with one or both short-sighted parents are more likely to become short-sighted themselves.

But genetics isn’t the whole story. Increased screen time, less time outdoors, and lots of close-up work can also contribute to myopia developing and progressing.

The good news? Myopia can be managed.

At Brady Opticians, we offer advanced solutions designed to help slow down the progression of myopia in children — including Essilor Stellest™ lenses by Essilor. These innovative lenses are specially designed for myopia management and can make a real difference to your child’s long-term eye health.

If you’re concerned about your child’s vision — especially if myopia runs in the family — pop into store and ask us about Essilor Stellest lenses. Our team will be happy to chat through your options and advise on the best next steps.

👁️ Early action can make all the difference.

👁️ World Glaucoma Week | 8th–14th March 👁️

This week, Brady Opticians is supporting World Glaucoma Week (8th–14th March) — a global awareness initiative led by the World Glaucoma Association to highlight the importance of early detection and treatment of glaucoma.

Glaucoma is often known as the “silent thief of sight” because it can develop gradually and without noticeable symptoms in its early stages. Vision loss caused by glaucoma is permanent — and many people don’t realise they have the condition until significant damage has already occurred.

While there is currently no cure for glaucoma, early diagnosis and modern treatments can effectively slow or prevent further vision loss.

✔️ Regular eye examinations are essential
✔️ Advanced diagnostic technology can detect early changes
✔️ Early treatment helps protect long-term sight

If you’re over 40, have a family history of glaucoma, or haven’t had an eye test in the last two years, now is the perfect time to book an appointment.

Let’s work together to protect your sight — because your vision matters.

☀️ Did you know children’s eyes are more vulnerable to UV damage than adults’?

At Brady Opticians, we’re passionate about protecting little eyes.

Children’s eyes are still developing, and their lenses are clearer than adults’, which means more ultraviolet (UV) rays can reach the retina. Over time, too much UV exposure can increase the risk of serious eye conditions later in life.

👁️ Why are children more at risk?
• They spend more time outdoors
• Their eyes let in more UV light
• Damage from UV rays builds up over a lifetime

🕶️ How to protect your child’s eyes:
✔️ Choose sunglasses with 100% UVA & UVB protection
✔️ Look for the CE mark or UV400 label
✔️ Encourage wearing a wide-brimmed hat on sunny days
✔️ Don’t forget protection even when it’s cloudy – UV rays can still pe*****te

We offer a fantastic range of children’s sunglasses and prescription lenses with built-in UV protection, so your child can enjoy the sunshine safely.

What is Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)?

Age-related macular degeneration, often called AMD, is a common eye condition that affects the macula – the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. This is the vision we use for everyday tasks like reading, recognising faces, driving, and watching TV.

AMD usually develops gradually and is more common in people over the age of 50. While it doesn’t cause total blindness, it can make central vision blurred or distorted, which can have a big impact on day-to-day life.

There are two main types of AMD:
Dry AMD – the most common form, which develops slowly over time
Wet AMD – less common but more serious, as it can cause rapid vision loss

Early signs can include needing brighter light to read, blurred or distorted vision, or difficulty recognising faces. In the early stages, AMD may not cause noticeable symptoms at all – which is why regular eye examinations are so important.

Although there’s currently no cure for AMD, early detection and the right management can help slow its progression and protect your vision.

If you have concerns about your eyesight, or a family history of AMD, our team at Brady Opticians is here to help with expert advice and comprehensive eye examinations.

👁️ Looking after your vision starts with an eye test.
