Have you heard of having Skin-to-Skin with your baby after birth? 👶🏻
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We were chatting about this at my last hypnobirthing course in Kerry in January. Skin-to-skin (also known as kangaroo care) is where a new baby is placed directly onto their mother’s chest immediately after birth. is an excellent resource for all things oxytocin and skin-to-skin
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Partners are encouraged to do skin-to-skin with baby also ~ babies will recognise their voice from womb 🙌🏻
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here are some of the benefits
✨ Encourages healthy brain development for baby
✨ Helps to reduce stress in baby due to oxytocin release
✨ Regulates baby’s temperature (particularly premature babies)
✨ Reduces chances of postpartum depression in mother
✨ Encourages better sleep in baby
✨ Encourages weight gain in baby
✨ Can be of particular benefit for premature babies
✨ Shorter duration third stage of labour (birth of placenta)
✨ Early and more successful initiation of breastfeeding
✨ Promotes meaningful bonding between baby and parent
✨ Baby can feel mother’s heartbeat ~ familiar from womb
✨ Regulates baby’s heart rate and blood pressure
✨ Stabilises baby’s breathing
✨ Regulates baby’s blood sugar levels
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you cannot have Skin-to-Skin directly after birth, you can still do this as soon as you & baby are together again. Skin-to-Skin can continue for the weeks and months after birth! ❤️
