You might notice your child often sits in a W-shape on the floor.
This is very common — especially in children who are more flexible or hypermobile.
💡 Why do some children W-sit?
It gives a wide base of support
Requires less core strength and balance
Can feel easier for bendy joints
Over time, frequent W-sitting can reduce opportunities to build:
Core strength
Trunk rotation
Balance and postural control
✅ Cross-legged sitting encourages:
Stronger core muscles
Better posture
Balance and coordination
👶 What should parents do?
Gently encourage variety rather than constantly correcting
Offer alternatives: cross-legged, long sitting, kneeling, side sitting
Focus on lots of active floor play, climbing, crawling and movement
✨ Occasional W-sitting is not harmful — it’s the habit that matters.
If you’re unsure or your child has pain, fatigue, or delays, a paediatric physiotherapist can assess for hypermobility and can help.
