Do you know our Sunflower story?

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower was chosen because the sunflower is a universally recognised and cheerful symbol that suggests happiness, positivity, strength, growth, and confidence.

It’s discreet yet visible, its bright yellow colour and distinctive shape make it easy to spot from a distance, helping wearers feel recognised without needing to explain their disability out loud.

- Discreet yet visible: subtle, but clear enough to show you may need extra support
- Positive and uplifting: sunflowers spread warmth and understanding
- Universally recognised: a sunflower means something good, wherever you are in the world

Without a clear, visual sign, it can be hard to understand the daily barriers faced by people with a non-visible disability. The Sunflower helps bridge that gap, with just one small symbol.

Have you seen the Sunflower Extra card?

Your Sunflower lanyard already shows you have a non-visible disability and might need a bit more time, help or understanding. The Sunflower Extra card goes a step further, it helps you quietly share more details about the help you need, when you want to.

How? You carry your card with you, just like your normal Sunflower card. When you want to share more information, you simply hold your card near a smartphone (yours or someone else’s). A private page pops up on the screen with the details you chose to share, so you don’t have to explain things out loud.

More support. Less explaining. More Confidence. 🌻

World Diabetes Day

Making the invisible visible. 🌻

More than 800 million people globally live with Diabetes.

Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects how the body regulates blood glucose (sugar) levels. It occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone that helps glucose enter the cells to be used for energy. Without proper insulin function, glucose builds up in the bloodstream. Fortunately, with effective treatments—including medication, lifestyle changes, and monitoring—people with diabetes can manage the condition, preventing serious complications such as vision loss, kidney failure, and heart disease, to lead fulfilling lives.

There are two main types:

- Type 1 Diabetes, which is autoimmune, where little or no insulin is produced
- Type 2 Diabetes, can be due to not enough insulin production or insulin resistance

Eight lesser-known types of diabetes:

* Gestational diabetes
* Maturity onset diabetes of the young (MODY)
* Neonatal diabetes
* Wolfram Syndrome
* Latent Autoimmune diabetes in Adults (LADA)
* Type 3c diabetes
* Steroid-induced diabetes
* Cystic fibrosis diabetes

Not all disabilities are visible.

Globally, 1 in 6 people (that’s over 1.3 billion) live with a disability, and up to 80% of those have a non-visible disability, meaning it's not immediately apparent to you. This includes conditions like chronic pain, autism, anxiety, ADHD, diabetes, Crohn’s, and more.

It is possible to create inclusive events that meet the needs of disabled people, as demonstrated at a recent Purple Tuesday event. Dr Shani Dhanda's children's book, No Horn Unicorn, was brought to life by an inclusive, magical drone show featuring 500 drones. The show was narrated at a lower volume, accompanied by gentle music, and displayed on a giant screen in the Westfield shopping centre's piazza, which featured captions and a BSL interpreter.

Through storytelling, we learn that just because someone is different, it doesn't mean they aren't special and valued.

The Sunflower serves to make public spaces accessible, and by working with events, we seek to remove barriers so that everyone is seen, heard, and included.
