-> Hip Replacement
Hip replacement surgery is a procedure in which a surgeon makes an incision over the side of the thigh, removes the diseased parts of the hip joint, and replaces them with new, artificial parts. Why it’s performed
Your doctor may recommend hip replacement if you have significant pain, inflammation and damage to your hip joint due to conditions such as:
• Osteoarthritis (most common)
• Rheumatoid arthritis
• Osteonecrosis (avascular necrosis)
• Injury such as hip fracture
• Tumor in the hip joint

-> Knee replacement -
Knee replacement surgery, also known as arthroplasty, is generally regarded as an effective treatment for end-stage knee arthritis. It results in improved knee function and significantly relieves severe pain caused by degenerative joint diseases. All knee replacement procedures are generally divided into 2 major groups, depending on whether the knee is replaced totally or partially. A knee joint is often compared to a hinge which allows to flex, extend and limitedly rotate the lower leg. Structurally it resembles three separate joints: a slightly rounded end of the thigh bone forms 2 separate articulations with a slightly hollow end of the shinbone which has a mobile kneecap on top. The most common indication for total knee replacement is severe osteoarthritis that affects all surfaces of these synergic joints and causes pain which is unresponsive to medical management.

-> Cataracts
What is a cataract? The eye is like a camera where the retina is the film at the back, and the lens is positioned at the front of the eye, just behind the pupil. A cataract is a clouding in the lens of the eye. The lens in your eye focuses light and is constructed of proteins and fluid. The proteins are arranged in a parallel fashion to allow the light to pass through the lens without interruption. The pupil dilates and contracts to control the level of light reaching the retina and the lens adjusts automatically to allow you to see objects clearly at various distances.

-> Bariatrics
Overweight and obesity is defined as ”abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health” (World Health Organisation, 2017). It is a progressive, chronic and complex disease affecting all ages and genders. Body mass index (BMI) is the most widely used measure of obesity in clinical practice as direct assessment of body fat is not readily available. BMI defined as weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters (kg/m2), is considered to be the best available population marker for monitoring trends in overweight and obesity in adults, children and young people over time.

This month, Healthcare Abroad had the pleasure of hosting an Educational GP Ambassador Trip 🏥

We welcomed a group of GPs from Ireland to visit the medical facilities available to Irish patients who travel for treatment under the EU Cross Border Healthcare Directive. To date, more than 2,500 Irish patients have received HSE reimbursed medical treatment through Healthcare Abroad. However, awareness of the Directive remains limited, making visits like this essential.

Over the weekend, our guests visited the state-of-the-art hospitals of HCB Dénia and Vithas Valencia Turia, and took part in an educational workshop featuring Paul Byrne from Healthcare Abroad, alongside presentations from leading specialists including:

Dr Antonio Alberola – Bariatric Surgery (Gastric Bypass vs. Gastric Sleeve)

Dr Anwar Saab – Advances in Complex Spinal Fusion

Dr Fernando Sendra – Advances in Knee Surgery

Sergio Verhoeven – Post-Operative Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation

Dr Lucas Kleijn – Anterior Approach Hip Replacement

Dr Evaristo Castedo & Dr Paloma Martinez – High-Resolution Cardiovascular Medicine

We also heard from a GP who shared their firsthand experience of working with Healthcare Abroad and supporting patients travelling for treatment.

Our goal is to spread awareness, showing how Irish patients can access world-class care in Spain with just a GP referral, and ensuring GPs know that their patients will receive the highest level of care. The Spanish healthcare system ranks #3 in Europe and #7 globally, ensuring patients receive the highest standards of treatment and care.

A special thank you to Dr Ana Vasbinder for welcoming us to HCB Hospital in Dénia, and to Dr Javier Palau for an insightful tour of Vithas Valencia Turia Hospital. We’d also like to thank Lola Giner from Visit Valencia for her engaging presentation, showcasing the many wonderful experiences the city offers to patients and their companions.

💬 Neck Surgery Q&A with Brian from Cork

Q: What surgery did you have?
A: I had level two Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion Surgery

Q: How long had you been dealing with pain?
A: I’d been suffering with pain and discomfort for 8 years, so it had really started to affect my day-to-day life.

Q: What made you get in touch with Healthcare Abroad?
A: I first heard about Healthcare Abroad through my credit union, and then again on Red FM in Cork, which gave me the confidence to reach out.

Q: How did you find the process and paperwork?
A: Honestly, it was seamless. We didn’t have to do any work ourselves. Healthcare Abroad handled almost everything from start to finish.

Q: Did you meet other Irish patients, and did that help?
A: Yes, I met loads of Irish patients and it was a massive help. The camaraderie and craic were great.

Q: Who was your surgeon and what was the hospital like?
A: My surgeon was Dr. Saab, and the hospital was fantastic. The staff and facilities were absolutely top class.

Q: What were the hospital and hotel staff like?
A: They were unreal, I couldn’t fault any of them. Everyone was so helpful.

Q: Did anyone stand out during your time away?
A: All of the people were great, but Joe really stood out. Having an Irish lad collect us and look after us made a huge difference.

Q: What are you most looking forward to when you get home?
A: Getting back to working without pain is the big one for me.

Q: What would you say to someone thinking about surgery abroad?
A: Get it done. Contact Healthcare Abroad and go for it — you won’t regret it.

📸A snapshot from last Saturday captures recent hip-replacement patients meeting with Dr. Lucas Kleijn and Caterina, the Medical Patient Liaison from the Healthcare Abroad team, at the Daniya Hotel in Denia.

👥As part of the follow-up support offered by our medical team, Dr. Kleijn took time over the weekend to visit patients after their procedures at HCB Denia and ensure their recovery was progressing smoothly.

🇮🇪This personalised aftercare is why Dr. Kleijn is so popular among Irish patients and it underscores our Care Concept; a commitment to being there for you every step of the way.

"The drivers and the support team are in the hotel every day, and they are incredibly helpful, not to mention a bit of craic" - Fiona's Hip Replacement in HCB Denia ✅

"A first-rate experience from start to finish. I was supported throughout the whole process. I was able to access hip replacement surgery quickly, and I went through the credit union for a loan, who deal directly with Healthcare Abroad, so there was no need for me to even manage the financial side of things. Healthcare Abroad book the hotel for you (which you pay for), and they have people who meet you when you land in Spain, collect you from the airport and bring you to the hotel."

"The drivers and the support team are in the hotel every day, and they are incredibly helpful, not to mention a bit of craic. The hospital is first rate, as are the staff. You get 10 sessions of physio once you are discharged and that really makes a difference to your recovery. I travelled by myself, but there’s a community of other patients and their carers around for company if you need anything. About half the people who travelled for surgery at the same time as me came alone."

"I am glad I chose this option versus staying in Ireland for it, especially for the rehab post-op, which has built my confidence and physical ability after surgery."

Update: 3 weeks post-surgery⏰

"I am convalescing in Calpe, and the sea and sunshine are good for the soul! Staples out and virtually pain free, walking with one crutch indoors and over short distances."

Penny from Dublin's Septum Straightening Surgery in Alicante - Reimbursed by the HSE🏥

A septoplasty is a procedure to straighten a deviated septum, the wall of bone and cartilage that separates your nostrils. Penny came over to Spain last month for surgery under the EU Cross Border Directive and she tells us below how her experience was.

"I can't thank Healthcare Abroad enough for all they did for me. They made my stay in Spain as comfortable as was possible, making sure I was escorted to and from all my hospital visits. The hospital I had my operation in was a lovely place. All the staff were very professional and very, very nice. My consultant, Dr. Fransisco Pastor was incredible and I can't thank him and his team and Vithas Medimar Hospital in Alicante enough."

"I have recently returned to full-time work and I cannot express how great it is to be pain free." - 3 Months after Gerry's Hip Replacement in Spain ✅

"Dr Sendra had advised me that it would take between two to three weeks before I would see a rapid improvement in my recovery. He was true to his word. By week 3 my mobility was improving rapidly on a daily basis. Continuing at home with the online physio program that the hospital gave me played a major part in this."

"I am so grateful to Healthcare Abroad for everything that they have done to get me back to where I am today. I'll never again take for granted the simplest of things like putting on my own socks and tying my shoelaces in comfort."

"Healthcare Abroad professionalism from when I first contacted them to the present day has been exceptional. They are one of the best companies that I have ever dealt with in any aspect of my life. Should you need surgery, do yourself a favour, and contact Healthcare Abroad and at least hear what they have to say."

"If you want any independent opinion or just a chat about my experience with them, then feel free to message me on here."

"Again many thanks to Healthcare Abroad for giving me the chance to get back to living a normal life."
