Both Mat and Reformer Pilates come from the same foundation — Joseph Pilates’ method of controlled, mindful movement designed to build strength, mobility, and balance.
Mat Pilates is the purest form of the method. It challenges you to control your body using your own strength, coordination, and awareness. We sometimes use small props like a ball, band, or ring to add variety and resistance.
✨ Great for deepening core strength, building control, and improving body awareness.
✨ It’s deceptively challenging — without springs or straps to assist you, your body does all the work!
The reformer uses springs, a moving carriage, and straps to both support and challenge your body. The resistance can make some exercises feel more accessible, while others become even more intense.
✨ Great for improving alignment, increasing range of motion, and developing strength through resistance.
✨ It’s incredibly versatile — the machine meets you where you are and helps you progress safely and effectively.
Mat classes are usually a little more affordable because class sizes are bigger and there’s no specialised equipment to maintain.
Reformer Pilates involves smaller groups, more individual attention, and machines that require careful upkeep.
Both will make you stronger, more balanced, and more connected to your body — and combining them gives you the best of both worlds.
So, you don’t have to choose! A mix of one Mat and one Reformer class each week is a powerful way to build strength, awareness, and confidence — and to really feel the full benefits of Pilates in your body.
If you’ve only tried one style so far, this is your sign to explore the other — your body will thank you.
