WHAT TO DO IF YOU GET SPRAYED OR GASSED:
Having a respirator would be best if things got ugly, but failing that, cover your face with a bandana/scarf and avoid getting the chemical into your eyes.
***Get out of the cloud of spray or gas. Seek high ground, as most forms of tear gas are heavy; the closer you are to the ground, the higher the concentration of gas.
***Move into an area with fresh air, if possible.
Walk, don’t run. Running may cause you to breath more heavily, filling your lungs with more tear gas. Try to keep your breathing even.
***Flush the affected area with lots of water for 10-15 minutes to wash away the contaminants.
***Try not to touch your eyes, nose, or mouth.
***Remove clothing that may have come into contact with the spray to decontaminate and prevent re-contamination. Cutting off clothing rather than pulling it over the head helps avoid further irritation to the eyes and skin.
***Blink the eyes rapidly to help flush out the chemical
If you’re still having symptoms 30 minutes or so after getting all the agents off,or are having eye or lung issues, seek medical care.
Emergency responders may use wipes and saline solutions to help relieve symptoms of pepper spray exposure.
