Happy International Home Birth Day!

Happy International Home Birth Day!

It’s International Homebirth Day!

So why might someone choose to have their baby at home?
-it is as safe as hospital birth for many women & babies
-less risk of interventions (e.g. episiotomy, forceps, caesarean)
-do not have to leave house while in labour to transfer to hospital
-can have whoever you want present (inc. children)
-get to sleep in own bed straight after
-less risk of picking up hospital infections (inc. most recently COVID-19!)
-previous traumatic hospital birth experience
-visits from midwife at home after birth
Research shows that a planned home birth is a safe alternative to a planned hospital birth for many pregnant women. Homebirths in Ireland are available under the HSE and also privately.

The HSE provides homebirths directly through a few hospitals (National Maternity Hospital, Waterford General & Wexford General) and in-directly through Self Employed Community Midwives (SECMs). These midwives are insured and paid for by the HSE but sourced directly by the parents-to-be.

Private Midwives have their own insurance and are paid for by the parents-to-be. These midwives generally have more flexibility in who they provide care for and may cover areas not covered by HSE services.

-Antenatal
-VBAC
-Breastfeeding Preparation

We at Antenatal Ireland can feel the distress of pregnant people and their partners in this uncertain time. Facing into birth and early parenting without access to antenatal education may be daunting.

Many of our small group classes and private in-home 1:1 classes are still running, with social distancing measures adopted.

However, for those who cannot, or would rather not, attend face-to-face classes we are preparing free content on our new YouTube Channel (coming soon!) and will also be offering private online courses. We recognise that not everyone is in a position to pay upfront for private courses so we will be offering payment plans for those who need them and a sliding scale for those most in need.

PM or email info@antenatalireland.ie for more information.

Our Classes

Our 1-Day Antenatal & Early Parenting class is practical, with lots of opportunities to practise positions, massage, relaxation and breathing for labour, as well as parenting skills such as nappy changing (on a doll!). The day is aimed at expectant mothers and their birth partners. Partners learning forms an important part of the course. There's lots of emotional support for this major life change, both from the teacher and the other parents-to-be in the class. See what others have said about the class below. Class size is limited to 6 - 8 couples. This ensures plenty of time to ask questions, practice skills and get to know others to form new friendships as new parents. Private one-to-one sessions are also available if the group class doesn't suit you or the dates don't work as well as Refreshers and VBAC sessions (after a Caesarean birth). The content of a course may vary depending on the group's needs. Each group sets its own agenda at the start of class. Class outline: o What happens during the three stages of labour - how women's bodies work best o Comfort measures for labour: massage, rhythmical breathing, active labour positions, relaxation o Tips on how to give yourself the best chance of a straightforward birth, build your confidence and feel empowered o Exploring all your birth options and choices o Communication with midwives/doctors and how to make informed decisions o Looking after your pelvic floor o What to expect for a hospital birth, dealing with the unexpected, different kinds of births, how to have your needs met and what's available for pain management o The role of birth partners; what they need to know and how they can provide the best support - for birth and after o Post natal - getting breastfeeding off to a good start including information on access to Cuidiú's voluntary breastfeeding services and counsellors; postnatal depression; practical baby care - bathing, nappy changing and baby safety. to Antenatal and postnatal depression o The emotional side of having a baby and coping in the early days Class run by a qualified, experienced Cuidiú antenatal educator.
