Is weight lifting safe for kids?!
Weight lifting is absolutely fine for kids(adolescents) when done in a controlled environment under supervision of a knowledgeable personal trainer, the reason people think this is bad is because of the myth it will stunt their growth and that isnt true at all... What will stunt their growth will be damage to the growth plate on the bone which can happen & would more than likely happen in a dynamic contact sport than in a controlled weight lifting environment but saying that dont mean kids shouldn't play contact sports, kids need to be active and play a sport... we are talking about a freak accident here when a kid does manage to damage or break a bone on the growth plate so we cant wrap kids up in bubble wrap living in fear that this might happen.
We allow kids to play sports & we should encourage them to play sports especially with obesity becoming such a problem in Ireland but we should open our eyes to weight training for kids and the benefits of it. Kids will increase their strength, improve bone density, increase muscle mass, improve stability of joint's, all of which are vital in preventing injury if a kid is playing in a repetitive sport and overall improves health even if the kid isn't envoled in a sport yet but the weight lifting will give them a great base so if they only pick up a sport or become interested in a sport in thier late teens they will have the strength there to back them up which is a huge advantage to the person when looking to learn a new skill.
