The most common symptoms of sinusitis include:
* A blocked or runny nose. If your nose produces green or yellow mucus, you probably have a bacterial infection.
* Pain and tenderness in the face (near the infected sinuses). You may experience a throbbing pain that is worse when you move your head, and toothache or pain in your jaw when you eat.
* A high temperature.
Other possible symptoms include:
* tiredness,
* headache,
* cough,
* bad breath (halitosis),
* pressure in your ears,
* loss of taste and smell, and
* a feeling of being generally unwell.

If your sinusitis is severe or keeps coming back, your GP may refer you to an ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist who will carry out tests to determine the underlying cause.

You may have a CT scan to find out the cause of your sinusitis

In these cases, treatment options are:
* antibiotics,
* steroid sprays or drops, or
* surgery (if other treatments have failed)

Hoarseness or Dysphonia means a change in the sound of someone’s voice. People suffering from hoarseness can experience a strained, husky or breathy voice.

* How is Hoarseness treated?

A key question here is whether the hoarseness is constant or getting worse or does it come and go with periods of “normal” voice in between.

Intermittent mild episodes of hoarseness: In most cases this will settle by itself.

To help relieve the symptoms one can:
• rest the voice (but don’t resort to whispering which can make matters worse).
• drink plenty of fluids (avoid too many fizzy drinks).
• avoid alcohol. • avoid cigarette smoke.
• take Antacids e.g Gaviscon if you get a build-up of acid in the throat.

IF:
* Persistent and / or worsening hoarseness
• prolonged hoarseness for more than four weeks
• repeated spells of hoarseness without reason
• prolonged sore throat or difficulty swallowing for more than two weeks
It is particularly important to see the doctor with these symptoms if the person is a smoker or drinks more than the recommended amount of alcohol.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a new respiratory illness. It has not previously been seen in humans.

This type of coronavirus is also known as 2019-nCov or novel coronavirus.

Symptoms

It can take up to 14 days for the symptoms of coronavirus to appear.

These symptoms may include:

*a cough
*shortness of breath
*breathing difficulties
*fever (high temperature)
Coronavirus can also cause more severe illness including:

*pneumonia
*severe acute respiratory syndrome
*kidney failure
Risk of catching coronavirus

There has been no confirmed case of coronavirus in Ireland.

Following the increased number of COVID-19 cases in Italy, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) now rates the risk of similar clusters of cases in other EU countries as moderate to high.

If there is a case here, health professionals will try to contact anyone who has been in contact with the infected person.

You do not need to follow any advice in relation to coronavirus if you have:

*not been to one of the affected areas
*not been in contact with a person who has coronavirus
*not been to a healthcare facility where patients with coronavirus were treated
Test - when you may need to be tested for coronavirus

*You will only need to be tested for coronavirus if you have symptoms and have in the last 14 days been:

*in close contact with a confirmed case of coronavirus
*to one of the affected areas
in a healthcare centre or hospital where patients with coronavirus were being treated

22/02/2020

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a condition that causes interrupted breathing during sleep.

Symptoms of OSA include:
* feeling very sleepy during the day
* waking up with a sore or dry throat
* poor memory and concentration
* headaches (particularly in the morning)
* irritability and a short temper
* anxiety
* depression
* lack of interest in s*x
* in men, impotence (inability to get or maintain an er****on)
Some people with OSA may also wake up frequently during the night to urinate.

If you have OSA, it could affect your ability to drive. It is important that you inform your doctor and the Road Safety Authority (RSA) about a condition which could impact on your driving ability.

The next step is to observe you while you are asleep. To do this, you may be asked to spend a night at a sleep centre so that any events that indicate OSA can be monitored. This is known as polysomnography (see below).
Alternatively, you may be given a monitoring device to wear at night while you sleep at home (a home sleep study). The device is returned to the sleep centre the following day so that the recorded information can be downloaded by staff.

The main investigation into your sleep is polysomnography. This investigation will enable sleep specialists to decide what is the best treatment for you.

Moderate to severe cases of sleep apnoea may need to be treated using a type of treatment called continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP).

Correction of a deviated nasal septum may be helpful in facilitating CPAP therapy in selected patients where CPAP is compromised by nasal obstruction.
If your nose is blocked and the surgeon thinks this is contributing significantly towards the snoring, you may be offered an operation to clear your nose.
