We were so grateful to visit Dundalk yesterday to receive a cheque from one of our Dublin Marathon Runners.

Paul raised an incredible €6,450 for Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Ireland while also completing his first ever marathon! Thank you to you all - Paul, Fiona, Aoife, and Grainne - the level of commitment a marathon takes for an entire family is so high and to do it while raising funds for a charity is even more admirable 💙

We have very limited spaces for the 2026 Marathon -if you are interested in being a part of you can apply here: https://consoles.realbuzz.com/charity/dublin-marathon/listings/?utm_source=Irish+Life+Dublin+website&utm_medium=Listing+Page&utm_campaign=7+June+23

The What Works for Me team delivered SBHI's pilot, Inclusive Recruitment Workshop last month.

This has been carefully crafted and delivered by our Employment Facilitator, Karen Chadwick. Thank You to International Cork for giving their Recruitment and Training team the time to do our workshop. The feedback has been fantastic, with staff learning and contributing lots on the day. We look forward to refining the workshop and working with more businesses in Ireland to support them in making their recruitment practices more inclusive, to offer more employment opportunities for those living with Spina Bifida, Hydrocephalus and other disabilities.

Our Mission

This page has been created to raise awareness of spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus. We want to provide information and advice to those with the conditions as well as those who have family and friends with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus.

Through this page you can also find information on our fundraising initiatives and how to become a volunteer with the organisation. We will also update this page with news on our conferences and seminars which take place throughout the year.

Spina Bifida is a relatively common condition, which affects about one in every 1000 children born per year in Ireland. Ireland has one of the highest incidences of Spina Bifida births in the world. Spina Bifida is the most common neural tube defect (NTD) which causes incomplete development of the spinal cord.

SBHI, Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Ireland was established in 1968 by a small group of parents whose children had Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus. These parents continue to dedicate their time to the association and are now elected volunteers on our Board of Directors as well as being elected to Branch Committees nationally. Today, SBHI has over 4 000 members and has branches in all four provinces, as well as a professionally run National Resource Centre based in Clondalkin, Dublin 22.
