The Forget Me Nots

The Forget Me Nots The Forget Me Nots Choir unites older people with family, friends and neighbours and has a special welcome for those affected by memory loss.

The Forget Me Nots Choir meets in Baldoyle Community Hall every Tuesday from 11am to 12.30pm. It is an inclusive choir that unites older people with family, neighbours and friends, and which is particularly welcoming to those affected by dementia or memory loss. Participants are drawn from the community as well as the HSE Day Care Centres and Alzheimer's Society Social Clubs in the Dublin NorthEast region. The aims of the choir are:

1. To extend access to a quality, professionally managed Arts activity for the continued self-growth and creative enrichment of our members.
2. To promote wellbeing and happiness through song (as gaeilge freisin) and through social inclusion in our community.
3. To record and share any anecdotal or empirical learning we gain regarding the benefits of this project for our members and for the wider community. The choir got its inspiration from The Unforgettables Chorus founded in New York in 2011 by Dr. Mary Mittelman of NYU Langone Medical Centre’s Comprehensive Centre on Brain Aging. Norah Walsh, Musical Director and Emmet O'Connor, Piano Accompanist are both highly distinguished music professionals. The Forget Me Nots is the first choir of its kind in Dublin's Northside and aims to interact with the community to raise awareness about memory loss conditions and our seniors' special place in our community.

There aren't enough words to do justice to the joy, pride and gratitude we feel for being part of a project for the last two years, co-facilitiated with Community Arts Partnership, Belfast with the 'This is Me' choir and The Music Yard from Larne.

The project, funded and supported by Creative Ireland and supported locally by Fingal County Council culimated in a Gala Concert in historic Stormont yesterday.

We were joined by superb musicians Shane McVicker on piano, Brian Fleming on bodhrán, Richard Aitcheson on fife and lambeg drum and Robert Harvey on flute.

So many fabulous memories and firm friendships made over the two years. Thank you to everyone who made this possible.

We've been on an incredible 2-year Shared Island journey with a similar inclusive choir 'This is Me' from Larne in Northern Ireland. Funded and supported by Creative Ireland and supported locally by Creative Fingal, Fingal County Council and co-facilitated by Community Arts Partnership in Belfast.

The finale of this journey is a Gala Concert in historic Parliament Buildings, on Saturday, 21st February, to showcase our repertoire and debut a brand new song written by our Choral Director, Norah Constance Walsh, inspired by workshops held on the journey. Registration for this free concert is through the QR code on the poster below.

Heartfelt thanks to our friends in The Music Yard, and Community Arts Partnership and absolutely everyone involved in this project. Setting out, we were excited and hopeful but can say with total honesty, we have been moved and changed by the experience. It has been life-affirming, we have made lasting friendships and it's simply been a privilege every step of the way.

Our own fabulous Eddie Peppard writes his memoir 'Stories I Carry' after returning to adult education at the age of 88! It's never too late to follow your dreams. Eddie, we are SO proud of you. ❤

Writes Lauren Ross of the Drogheda Leader:

"A Bettystown man in his late 80s has completed a written memoir after joining the LMETB Adult Learning Service on King Street, Drogheda to improve his literacy skills and share his life story.
The inspiring learner, Eddie Peppard (88) initially found writing difficult, but over a two-year period, he hand-wrote his life story with support from a volunteer tutor, Catriona.
The finished memoir, described as “a heartfelt book” that tells Eddie’s life story and celebrates his journey, has been highlighted by staff as an example of what adult learners can achieve with time, encouragement, and consistent support.
The LMETB said, “Eddie’s story shows that learning can change lives at any age. With encouragement, patience, and determination, anyone can improve their skills, gain confidence, and create something they can be proud of. Eddie’s journey proves it is never too late to follow your dreams and enjoy the rewards of learning.”
Speaking about his achievement, Eddie said, "I am delighted and excited that I can read and write now. It's like the doors were closed and now they are open."
