Diabetic retinopathy affects both men and women living with diabetes, but pregnancy can place women with diabetes in a higher-risk category requiring specialist monitoring.

Speaking on Real Health with Karl Henry, Prof. David Keegan, consultant ophthalmic surgeon at Mater Private Network in Dublin, explained that while general risk factors are similar for men and women, women with diabetes who become pregnant need closer surveillance, as retinopathy can progress more rapidly.

Through national screening programme, Diabetic RetinaScreen, of which Prof. Keegan is the clinical director, changes in the retina can be detected early, often before symptoms appear, allowing for timely treatment and protection of sight.

Knee revision surgery involves replacing a previous knee replacement that is no longer functioning as it should.

In this video, Mr. Michael Leonard, consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Mater Private Network in Dublin, explains that revision surgery may be required due to loosening of the original implant, infection, or ongoing pain. While it is a more complex procedure than a primary knee replacement and recovery can take a little longer, it can be highly successful when performed for the right reasons.

Mr. Leonard outlines what happens during revision surgery, from carefully removing the original components to assessing bone quality and optimising the new implant to achieve the best possible outcome.

When Siobhan O’Connell noticed she was short of breath and her ankles were swollen, she thought it was just down to weight and lack of exercise. A visit to our Dublin hospital revealed something far more serious; she received the “shock of her life” and discovered that her heart function was only 25%.
She later learned that heart function below 35% carries a risk of sudden death. She was diagnosed with heart failure, but fortunately, she didn’t need surgery as her condition could be treated with medication.
Now, she shares one important message for women: “If in doubt, get it checked out.”
Prof. Mark Dayer, Consultant Cardiologist and Head of Heart Failure, explains that after menopause women’s risk of coronary disease rises significantly.

Don’t ignore the signs. Listen to your body. It could save your life. Read more, https://bit.ly/4qH44o6

During a mammogram, each breast is X-rayed from the side and from the top to examine the tissue. This scan is used to detect any abnormal changes in the breast and help with early detection of breast cancer. If you are over the age of 50, you will be invited to attend a breast screening once every two years. It is important that you become familiar with how your breasts look and feel at different times of the month and know what is normal for you. If you notice anything out of the norm, no matter what age you are, we advise you make an appointment with your GP.

When you have had a blood test, your cholesterol level is often an area of focus, but there are other markers that can offer valuable insight into your heart health and help guide further assessment and care.

Measures such as triglycerides, lipoprotein(a), haemoglobin, and creatinine can highlight potential risks, underlying conditions, or the need for closer monitoring. While no single blood test can confirm the risk of heart disease on its own, these results often play an important role in shaping prevention and treatment plans.
