Chronic Pain Ireland

Chronic Pain Ireland CPI National charity (RCN: 20028022 and Chy No 10779) providing information & support services. Established in 1992, Chronic Pain Ireland CLG.
(1)

In Europe 1 in 5 people live with chronic pain, in Ireland that figure is higher and estimated at 1 in 3. To create a greater awareness of Chronic Pain and to provide relevant information and support for those living with the condition, for their families and friends. is the only national organisation providing information and support services to people living with Chronic Pain. We are a registered charity, and we work with all stakeholders including those living with chronic pain, their families and carers, health professionals, students, researchers and others interested in chronic pain. CPI has demonstrated professional leadership in Ireland and throughout Europe by raising awareness of chronic pain, educating in methods of dealing with the condition, and advocating for the needs of people living in chronic pain. We advocate for multi-disciplinary treatment centres, improved health services and changes to the educational curriculum so that healthcare providers are more aware of the condition and the challenges of diagnosing, treating and managing the condition. We adhere to the principles of good corporate governance. We are transparent and compliant with all regulatory requirements. The Scheme to Support National Organisations is funded by the Government of Ireland through the Department of Rural and Community Development

CPI gratefully acknowledges SSNO funding and the ongoing support of Pobal and the Department of Rural and Community Development under the Programme and Scheme to Support National Organisations (SSNO) 2022-2025

Stigma doesnโ€™t just hurt feelings. It isolates, invalidates, and prevents people from seeking the support they need. Many feel pressured to hide their pain, push through symptoms, or avoid talking about it altogether.

At Chronic Pain Ireland, weโ€™re committed to changing that narrative. Through education, peer support, and advocacy, weโ€™re working to ensure that chronic pain is recognised, respected, and understood.

๐ŸŽ„ Family Expectations at Christmas ๐ŸŽ„

Long-standing habits and family obligations can strongly shape how we spend our time during the festive season โ€” sometimes more than we realise. For those living with chronic pain, these expectations can be especially challenging.

This Christmas, try focusing on what truly supports you:

โœจ Making Thoughtful Choices: Reflect on what matters most and choose where your energy goes.
โœจ Communicating Your Needs: Be clear about your limits and set boundaries that feel respectful and supportive.
๐Ÿซถ Your comfort and happiness matter. Prioritising your wellbeing is essential.

Research on Movement Observation in Chronic Upper-Limb Pain

We are looking for individuals who have been experiencing pain for more than 3 months in their upper limb(s) e.g., hand, arm and/or shoulder due to for example fractures and sprains, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Tennis Elbow, Rheumatoid Arthritis, or any other upper-limb pain that has lasted for over 3 months.

You will be asked about your experience with pain and movements and to view short video clips of different movements. You will be asked to make some judgements about the videos and to answer some questions about yourself and your pain experiences. This research could lead to a deeper understanding of movement-related difficulties in chronic pain.

The study will take approximately 45 minutes of your time, and as compensation, you will be entered into a prize draw to win one out of three ยฃ50 vouchers.

Criteria:
ยท English fluency sufficient to understand task instructions
ยท Age 18 or above
ยท Normal or corrected-to-normal vision.
ยท Chronic pain in one of your upper-limbs (for 3+ months)
ยท A computer device and stable internet connection (phone/tablet are not supported)

๐ŸŽ„ Handling Awkward Questions ๐ŸŽ„

Spending more time with family over Christmas can mean facing well-meaning but uncomfortable comments about your health. Here are a few ways to make these moments easier ๐Ÿ’œ

โœจ Understand Their Intentions:
Take a breath before responding to clumsy or intrusive questions. A simple response like, โ€œThank you for asking โ€” Iโ€™m managing as best I can right nowโ€ can acknowledge concern without going into detail.

โœจ Helpful Responses:
If someone truly wants to understand more, share what youโ€™re comfortable with โ€” then gently shift the conversation to a different topic.

โœจ Set Boundaries with Confidence:
Itโ€™s completely okay to let others know what is helpful and what isnโ€™t. Kind, clear boundaries protect your emotional wellbeing and encourage understanding.

๐ŸŽ„ Pacing During Christmas ๐ŸŽ„

The festive season often brings additional physical demands, which can be especially challenging for those managing chronic pain. Effective pacing can help you stay engaged in what matters while protecting your wellbeing.

โ€ข Focus on What Matters Most: Reflect on your priorities and choose the activities that bring you the most value and enjoyment.
โ€ข Adapt Tasks: Break tasks into smaller, manageable steps and seek support where needed.
โ€ข Prioritise Your Health: Taking a proactive, paced approach allows you to participate in the season while looking after your wellbeing.

๐ŸŽ„ Your Ideal Christmas ๐ŸŽ„
What would make Christmas truly special for you?

Christmas can be a beautiful time of year, but when youโ€™re living with chronic pain it can also feel overwhelming. This year, give yourself permission to shape the day around what you value most. ๐Ÿ’œ

โœจ Take a moment to imagine your ideal Christmas โ€” the moments, people and traditions that truly matter to you.
โœจ Break the day into small, manageable chunks and build in comfort breaks. Pacing isnโ€™t just helpful โ€” itโ€™s essential.
โœจ Choose what you genuinely want to do, not what you feel pressured to do. Protecting your energy is an act of self-care.
โœจ Let go of perfection. A simpler, softer Christmas can be just as meaningful.

You deserve a Christmas that supports your wellbeing and brings you joy, in whatever form that takes. ๐Ÿ’–
