Chronic Pain Ireland

Chronic Pain Ireland CPI National charity (RCN: 20028022 and Chy No 10779) providing information & support services. Established in 1992, Chronic Pain Ireland CLG.

In Europe 1 in 5 people live with chronic pain, in Ireland that figure is higher and estimated at 1 in 3. To create a greater awareness of Chronic Pain and to provide relevant information and support for those living with the condition, for their families and friends. is the only national organisation providing information and support services to people living with Chronic Pain. We are a registered charity, and we work with all stakeholders including those living with chronic pain, their families and carers, health professionals, students, researchers and others interested in chronic pain. CPI has demonstrated professional leadership in Ireland and throughout Europe by raising awareness of chronic pain, educating in methods of dealing with the condition, and advocating for the needs of people living in chronic pain. We advocate for multi-disciplinary treatment centres, improved health services and changes to the educational curriculum so that healthcare providers are more aware of the condition and the challenges of diagnosing, treating and managing the condition. We adhere to the principles of good corporate governance. We are transparent and compliant with all regulatory requirements. The Scheme to Support National Organisations is funded by the Government of Ireland through the Department of Rural and Community Development

CPI gratefully acknowledges SSNO funding and the ongoing support of Pobal and the Department of Rural and Community Development under the Programme and Scheme to Support National Organisations (SSNO) 2022-2025

Living with chronic pain?

Weโ€™re inviting adults with chronic pain to take part in a research study exploring a Virtual Reality (VR) education programme designed to help explain what chronic pain is and how it can be managed.

The programme runs over six weeks and uses an engaging virtual environment no long lectures and no prior VR experience needed!

By taking part, youโ€™ll help researchers understand whether this approach can improve pain understanding, wellbeing, and quality of life for people living with chronic pain.

Research on Movement Observation in Chronic Upper-Limb Pain

We are looking for individuals who have been experiencing pain for more than 3 months in their upper limb(s) e.g., hand, arm and/or shoulder due to for example fractures and sprains, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Tennis Elbow, Rheumatoid Arthritis, or any other upper-limb pain that has lasted for over 3 months.

You will be asked about your experience with pain and movements and to view short video clips of different movements. You will be asked to make some judgements about the videos and to answer some questions about yourself and your pain experiences. This research could lead to a deeper understanding of movement-related difficulties in chronic pain.

The study will take approximately 45 minutes of your time, and as compensation, you will be entered into a prize draw to win one out of three ยฃ50 vouchers.

Criteria:
ยท English fluency sufficient to understand task instructions
ยท Age 18 or above
ยท Normal or corrected-to-normal vision.
ยท Chronic pain in one of your upper-limbs (for 3+ months)
ยท A computer device and stable internet connection (phone/tablet are not supported)

Winter can make pain feel heavier โ€” cold weather, low energy, and shorter days often push us to retreat. While rest matters, shrinking our world can increase fear, stiffness, and pain over time.

โœจ Try these gentle tips instead:

1๏ธโƒฃ Think tiny, not big โ€“ One small, manageable action a day is enough. Tiny steps build confidence and help your body feel safe to move again.

2๏ธโƒฃ Pace with purpose โ€“ Balance activity and rest, and stop before pain flares. Pacing helps avoid the boom-and-bust cycle that can increase pain.

3๏ธโƒฃ Do what you enjoy โ€“ Movement doesnโ€™t have to be exercise. Gentle, enjoyable activities reduce fear and support both body and mind.

4๏ธโƒฃ Expect setbacks โ€“ Setbacks are normal. Kindness and flexibility matter more than perfection.

5๏ธโƒฃ Choose expansion over avoidance โ€“ Ask yourself if an action helps your world grow or shrink. Even small acts of courage still count.

๐ŸŒป This complimentary Sunflower Lanyard is issued to all members of Chronic Pain Ireland. The card is a specific Hidden Disabilities Sunflower for those living with โ€˜chronic painโ€™ and helps make an invisible condition a bit more visible.

๐Ÿ’ก We often face barriers daily, including a lack of understanding and negative attitudes, and the Sunflower lanyard discreetly identifies that we may need support, help, or just a little more time in shops, transport, or public spaces.

๐ŸŒŽ The Sunflower is a globally recognised symbol for non-visible disabilities, also known as hidden disabilities or invisible disabilities. The lanyard is very useful when โœˆ๏ธ๐Ÿš‰ travelling or at those times where we may need a little extra time or some assistance. Some of our members have reported a greater level of assistance in a hospital setting, also.
