🚑 A Little Space Goes a Long Way

Getting around busy towns and city streets can be challenging for everyone, and we understand that parking spaces can sometimes be hard to find. However, it’s really important to be mindful of designated emergency vehicle spaces.

Our ambulances are over 6 metres long, weigh 5.5 tonnes, and many are fitted with tail lifts and specialist equipment. That means we need a bit more room than the average vehicle to safely park, load equipment, and move patients.
Blocking or parking in ambulance bays, even “just for a minute”, can delay crews when they need quick access to their vehicle.

Please take a moment to check signage and park responsibly so that these spaces remain available when they’re needed most.
Thanks for helping us keep things moving 🚑

Sticks and stones may break your bones, but we can help. You'll get specialist care at your nearest injury unit for recent injuries (less than 6 weeks old) that are not life-threatening and unlikely to need admission to hospital.

Injury units can treat:
➡️ broken bones, sprains and strains, from knees to toes and from collarbone to fingertips
➡️ minor facial injuries (including oral, dental and nasal injuries)
➡️ minor scalds and burns
➡️ wounds, bites, cuts, grazes and scalp lacerations (cuts)
➡️ small abscesses and boils
➡️ splinters and fish hooks
➡️ objects stuck in eyes, ears or nose
➡️ minor head injuries (fully-conscious patients, who did not have loss of consciousness or vomit after the head injury)

Earlier today, multiple Swords crews alongside colleagues from Dublin South Central and Dublin Fire Brigade responded to Dublin Airport to provide emergency cover for a transatlantic flight that diverted due to a medical emergency. ✈️🚑

Incidents like this highlight the close coordination between emergency services to ensure a rapid response and immediate care wherever it’s needed — even before the aircraft reaches the stand.

Great teamwork by all involved.

Last Week, Paramedics and EMTs from across the Dublin and the North East region were recognised for their significant contribution to the National Ambulance Service.

Over 100 NAS staff and their families gathered in the Nuremore Estate in Carrickmaccross for the event, which recognised the life-saving interventions, the compassion and care to patients and the assurance which our staff provide to family members, friends and by-standers in emergency situations on a daily basis.

Our managers got the opportunity to recognise and thank their staff in stations across the region for their outstanding professionalism on a daily basis. All attendees also had the opportunity to pay tribute to ORM Sean Prior, who received a standing ovation for his 40 years of dedicated service to the National Ambulance Service. Well done to everyone involved!

Below are some of the pictures from our very own Swords Staff.

With demand on services higher than ever, crews in the North East have officially begun intensive Water Deployment Training 💦🚑

That’s right — from today onwards, no fire hydrant, hose, or suspicious puddle will be safe from the firm grip of an enthusiastic paramedic.

This week’s course covered:
• Advanced hose wrangling
• Tactical coiling techniques
• And the very important skill of looking busy while holding a hose

We’re pleased to confirm that after several hours of training, at least one hose was successfully rolled without it fighting back.

Inter-agency integration is going brilliantly. We expect to be fully qualified firefighters by some time this month. 🔥😉

It seems the forecourt strategy is spreading… 👀⛽️

Not to be outdone by NAS Finglas Stationthe crews in Swords have also adopted this highly specialised deployment model 🚑

After seeing the reaction across the region, we felt it was only right to be on hand locally — keeping a watchful eye on anyone experiencing sudden shock at the pump 😅

All joking aside, it’s business as usual for our Swords crews, continuing to support the community as always — just with the occasional “fuel-related observation post” thrown in!

Drive safe, take it handy… and here’s hoping your blood pressure doesn’t rise as fast as the fuel prices! 👀

A great example of how our service continues to evolve 👏

Recently, one of our Swords crews had the opportunity to work alongside a newer addition to the region – a Community Paramedic. This role brings an expanded skillset, with a strong focus on delivering care in the home or supporting alternative care pathways where appropriate.

Working together on scene, the benefits were clear. Not every patient needs to attend an Emergency Department, and having access to additional clinical decision-making and community-based options allows us to provide the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

It’s a positive step forward for both patients and crews, helping reduce unnecessary hospital visits while still ensuring safe, effective care.

Great teamwork all round 🤝

Sometimes the job takes our crews a little further from home than expected. Recently one of our crews was deployed to the North East region where they were backed up on scene by the Advanced Paramedic-led Rapid Response Vehicle (RRV) from Ardee.

These specialist units provide an additional level of clinical expertise and support on scene, helping crews deliver the highest level of care possible when patients need it most.

A big thank you to our colleagues in Ardee for the support and teamwork — it’s always great to see different regions working together when it matters.

Of course, there was also the small matter of the accents… while the teamwork was seamless, there may have been the odd moment where our Dublin crew and the local North East voices had to ask each other to repeat things once or twice! Thankfully good humour — and good patient care — translates in any accent. 🚑😄
