Mental Health Ireland’s annual “Hello, How Are You?” campaign returns for it's fifth year on May 15th, inviting people across Ireland to pause, connect, and have meaningful conversations about mental health. Built on a simple but powerful idea, it encourages us to ask “How are you?” and to truly listen to the answer.

Using the HELLO steps, Say Hello, Engage, Listen, Learn, and Offer ongoing support, the campaign reminds us that you do not need to be an expert to make a difference. A single genuine conversation can help reduce stigma, tackle loneliness, and let someone know they are not alone.

We were delighted to attend the launch of Game Plan, a new tool for sports clubs, aimed to help identify and respond to destructive gambling issues sooner. The event highlighted its adverse affect on mental health and need for people experiencing addiction, their friends and families and a call for earlier intervention.

We have published our submission to the Mental Health Commission consultation on the development of a Code of Practice on the use of pharmacological restraint.

We have long advocated for the regulation of this practice and successfully secured its inclusion in the new Mental Health Bill 2024.

Our submission emphasises that pharmacological restraint must be exceptional, proportionate, and grounded in a human rights-based, trauma-informed, and person-centred framework, with a clear commitment to reduction and eventual elimination.

We welcome the opportunity to contribute to this important process and to support the establishment of a robust, rights-based framework within mental health services in Ireland.

Everyone should have a legal right to an independent advocate when accessing mental health services.

This matters because if you are involuntarily detained or receiving treatment, you may not feel able to challenge decisions about your care. Currently, there is no guaranteed legal right to advocacy in primary law in Ireland.

Now is the time for change.

If something goes wrong in mental health services, people need a clear and fair way to raise concerns.

We are calling for an independent complaints mechanism to protect the dignity and rights of
people with mental health difficulties. Our latest video explains what this means, and why it matters.

Children should receive appropriate mental health care in the right setting.

We are calling for a clear legal safeguard to prevent children from being admitted to adult mental health units. Our latest video explains why this change is urgently needed.

Everyone should be able to understand their rights when accessing mental health services. We have partnered with the National Advocacy Service Ireland to highlight the urgent need for a statutory right to advocacy in the Mental Health Bill.

Advocacy changes lives. Watch and share James's powerful story.
