Everyone should have a legal right to an independent advocate when accessing mental health services.

This matters because if you are involuntarily detained or receiving treatment, you may not feel able to challenge decisions about your care. Currently, there is no guaranteed legal right to advocacy in primary law in Ireland.

Now is the time for change.

Our latest research on Perinatal Su***de in Ireland has been featured in the Irish Examiner.

The findings highlight an urgent need to strengthen how we identify and respond to perinatal mental health risks in Ireland, particularly beyond the early postpartum period when many maternal suicides occur.

Thank you to Ann Murphy for covering this important issue and helping bring these findings into the public conversation.

To mark International Women's Day, we have published research on the important topic of Perinatal Su***de in Ireland.

Su***de is the leading cause of late maternal deaths in Ireland. Behind every statistic is a person, a family and a community affected by profound loss. Our new briefing paper highlights key areas of concern and provides a starting point for further discussion, research, and policy development.

We were delighted to deliver a training session with HAIL Housing Association exploring the implications of the Mental Health Bill 2024 and what the proposed reforms will mean for services in practice.

It was a valuable opportunity to discuss how the legislation may shape the real world experience of people accessing mental health supports, and the role of advocacy, rights, and community services.

Thank you to HAIL for the invitation and for the important work they do supporting people to rebuild their lives through housing and mental health recovery.

We welcome Minister Mary Butler’s announcement today that €40.57 million has been allocated under the 2026 Capital Plan to develop new regional inpatient eating disorder centres and dedicated perinatal mother and baby units.

The funding will be used to initiate and progress 43 mental health infrastructure projects, including inpatient mental health services across Ireland.

This investment reflects the commitments set out in Sharing the Vision, strengthening specialist services and improving access to mental health care for women and families.
