Continued from slides.

So the patients response was “oh I’m definitely gluten and dairy sensitive but pregnancy has stopped the acne I normally get so I’ve been eating loads of gluten and dairy”!!!

Gluten is very inflammatory especially in those with a sensitivity, hence her CRP rising (CRP is an inflammatory marker). The inflamed gut of gluten sensitivity decreases the absorption of nutrients in particular iron and B12! Both of these nutrients are in high demand in pregnancy and even though the patient was taking good quality supplements and eating well, her levels weren’t rising as expected. Now, they were still considerably higher than the HSE level of acceptable but my patient and I were aiming for optimal.

Had I not been looking at her blood tests and the patient paying for private testing, this would not have been realised as these markers are not routinely checked in any prenatal blood work!!

So we’ll now work on a strategy, quite possibly going gluten free again while still pregnant. And also consider adding in some DAO. The fabulous formulator of the supplements I sell suggested it’s possibly the massive rise of DAO in pregnancy which stopped the acne and gut symptoms but when postpartum hits all symptoms could come back as DAO decreases and histamine overload starts again. Wow!!

That’s why seeing me is more than just cracking your back. But that’s why I’m constantly learning to better serve my patients. Patients are not always open and willing to learn and adapt but when they are massive improvements to their lives can happen.

Whether running for fun, for a distance goal, time goal, by yourself or with a running club, whether starting out for your first 5k or wanting to run marathons or even ultramarathons - chiropractic can help.

And even better when your chiropractor has the empathy and understanding and experience of running too.

So why not give chiropractic a try as part of your running package? Chiropractic can be very effectively combined with soft tissue treatment like deep tissue massage and dry needling done by a physiotherapist or physical therapist.

What used to confuse me is now one of my favourite parts of supporting patients; reading blood test reports.

And I’m constantly frustrated that glaring information isn’t actioned as the patient is ‘yet’ to become clinically deficient 🤬🤯🤬🤯 OR it wasn’t tested in the first place like B12, Vitamin D, full iron panel or full thyroid panel 🤬🤯🤬🤯 OR previous tests compared to see if there’s any trend in the readings 🤬🤯🤬🤯

Why bother sending patients for blood testing if the results aren’t going to be properly looked at?!??

Anyway, thrilled that I’m now able to give some guidance to patients about their test results and give them advice about improving their readings 👍🏻🙏🏻👍🏻🙏🏻

I had a 36 week first time mum in today for her second appointment for a breech baby. And part of today’s appointment I was trying to put the mums mind at ease that this was not her fault as she thought it was because she’s of slim build. When we become mums, we often self-blame but when it comes to breech while there are lots of techniques and some treatments that can help turn the baby, it’s more about supporting the mum to feel proactive and minimise self-blame. Breech is a variant of normal but since 2000 when research falsely claimed that a section was the safer way to be born, globally breech birth has been on the back foot with loss of skills, experience and confidence in breech vaginal birth.

Helping to turn a breech baby is about opening up all birth options for that mum. And about reducing stress on her. Yes, all breech presentation patients that I have treated have had a misaligned pelvis which is obviously a factor but not all breech presentation patients suffer with musculoskeletal pain.

This is about compassionate care and having an understanding of the maternity system that mum is having care from so you can better support her.

SLOWER OR STRONGER??

Before 2025 I had never run a half marathon. And before 2025 I wasn’t consistently running.

And what generally happens when you run is that you get caught up in the numbers. Running faster is better and running further is better. But that is not the whole picture.

Running is very humbling. One day a training session or race goes really well and another day it goes horribly. And we will still berate ourselves if we think we didn’t run fast enough or far enough.

But having run 4 half marathons in a year I’ve learnt that it’s not just about pace and distance. It’s also about not hitting the wall, about having fuelled appropriately, about feeling strong, knowing you did your best on the day, and not being so sore afterwards that it’s takes a long time to recover.

So while my official race times may have got longer, rather than getting slower, I actually think I’m getting stronger. Maybe with more training I’ll get faster and maybe I won’t. And if I don’t, I’ll still be proud of having taken on this physical and mental challenge of starting to run half marathons in my late 40’s.

Ceara and I are looking forward to hosting this event.

The initial postpartum phase is such an important time to make sure the new mum is nourished physically, emotionally and nutritionally. But is often not planned or not thought important. Take the time before the baby arrives to learn how to make sure you are properly looked after.

March stats!

I’m always delighted when I get to post my stats.

The breech bus definitely arrived one week of March when 4 consecutive pregnant new patients all attended due to breech babies!!

Grateful to all the mamas and the referrals. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🥹🥹

Berlin half marathon - thank you 🙏🏻 3/6 Super Half’s in aid of

I went into this race very nervous, carrying a small Achilles injury and had travelled solo so I decided it would be a ‘get over the line’ effort and to just enjoy it.

And did I enjoy it! I had no pressure on myself for time and the crowds were amazing but that turned out to be a very decent time considering. And yes I did cry when running through the Brandenburg Gate 🥹

I’d like to thank those who got me over the line and Fiona at Greystones Chiropractic clinic for the body care, for the weekly runs, chats and emotional support and for her continuing encouragement.

I’m so grateful that I get to train and run and raise money for The Pelvic Partnership, the charity that supports women with pregnancy related pelvic pain, many of whom can’t train or run due to incapacitating pain and whom I’m a recommended practitioner. If you’d like to sponsor me the link is in my bio.

So for now, it’s a little rest, a couple of smaller races before training starts again for the 4/6 Super Half in Copenhagen in September 2026.

I’ll be honest with you.. I’m nervous for my next race, the

Why? It’s because I’m injured and while there is no time expectation on me, I do kinda need to get over the finish line. And that’s because a charity is dependent on the money I’m raising and I don’t want this race series to be going into 2028!!

My left Achilles hasn’t been great for 3 weeks now since a speed session 9 days before the Lisbon half marathon. I completed Lisbon 3 weeks ago but I’ve been in pain ever since. I’ve received a lot of treatment from shock wave, chiropractic and deep tissue massage with dry needling and while it’s much better than it was I’m definitely not pain free.

On race day I’m going to wear my compression calf guards, wear heel lifts, take high strength pain relief before and after, take it much slower on the day and hope to cross the finish line. And smile 😀

I’ve committed so I will do my best to cross the finish line even if a little bit broken. As I know I’m still privileged that I get to do this at all.

If you’d like to sponsor me to raise much needed funds for the follow the link in my bio.

My eldest turns 13 tomorrow 🥹🥹

If only I knew then what I know now about birth and motherhood. But it was exactly her birth and motherhood that makes me the mother and person I am today.

I went through a lot during to that birth but unfortunately it’s also “normal” but actually “common”. A very medicalised augmentation of labour after 18 hours of my waters being gone; syntocin, epidural, episiotomy and forceps birth in what was originally planned as a home birth.

But I ended up with a postpartum haemorrhage, a bulging lumbar disc, postpartum depression, inability to breastfeed and birth trauma.

It would take years to recover but only after self-education, a subsequent home birth and explanations of why what my happened did by my homebirth midwife and birth trauma resolution when Esme was 7 years old.

Happy birthday to Esme for tomorrow as I was in labour for 36 hours. The most sweetest, empathic, clever and now as tall as me young woman. Love you so much 🥰
