The Christmas season can be joyful, but for those in recovery, it can also bring challenges.

Róisín, a past client of The Rutland Centre, spoke about the importance of self-care at Christmas and the simple tools that have helped her:

➡️ Having a plan in place for getting through the season
➡️ Identifying potential challenges and triggering events
➡️ Deciding how to approach social gatherings
➡️ Putting your own needs first and prioritising sobriety

Over the next few weeks, there can be increased pressure to attend family gatherings and nights out with friends.

For those in recovery, these situations can feel overwhelming, especially if they involve people or environments that could put sobriety at risk.

If you’re feeling unsure about upcoming events, it’s absolutely okay to plan ahead.
Think about what feels safe for you, and what doesn’t.

💙 Setting boundaries is not selfish.
💙You’re allowed to prioritise your wellbeing.
💙You deserve to feel safe and supported.

Let those around you know what you need. Clear communication can help friends, colleagues, and loved ones understand how to support your recovery over Christmas.
