Happy St Brigid’s Day to all our carers, young people in our care and families across Ireland. 🌿

St Brigid is often associated with renewal, hope and the nurturing of others and themes that sit close to the heart of fostering. Every new beginning, every small moment of care and every bit of encouragement helps a child grow in confidence.

Our Book of the Month is Becoming a Foster Carer: A Practical Guide by Helen Oakwater.

It is a gentle, insightful read that offers guidance on understanding trauma, building connection and supporting children as they settle into a new home. Many carers find it reassuring, especially in the early stages of their fostering journey.

If you would like more helpful resources, you can find them on our website.

We’re looking forward to our Foster Carer Annual Training Day taking place on February 20th during the February mid-term break.

This year’s training will focus on Behaviour as Communication with Christina Enright, looking at practical ways to support traumatised children and adolescents as they learn to regulate their emotions and behaviour. We’ll also be joined by EPIC, who advocate with and for children in care and young care-leavers.

The day will include dedicated activities for children and young people, with age-appropriate entertainment and spaces designed to help everyone feel comfortable and supported.

If your family would like to attend, please RSVP by Saturday 31st January by emailing

Family traditions often grow in the small, ordinary moments.

One of our carers, Debbie, told us how the little things became the heart of their home. The music on in the kitchen, everyone dancing around together, worries forgotten for a while. Those moments slowly turned into something the children looked forward to and something that made them feel part of the family.

For many children, it is these simple shared traditions that help them feel they belong. A song. A dance in the kitchen. A feeling of being included.

At Orchard Fostering, young people are at the centre of everything we do. We want them to feel supported, listened to and part of a community.

Two of the groups that help make this happen are:

✨ A Young Orchard Voice, where young people can share their thoughts and help shape the way we work.
✨ Le Chéile, a space where the birth children of foster families can meet, chat and support one another.

These groups remind us that fostering is never something done alone. It is a community effort, and every young person deserves to feel a sense of belonging. 💛

If you would like to learn more about fostering, we are always here to chat.

Fostering Myth: “You need a big house to foster.”

We hear this one often, but it simply isn’t true.
Fostering isn’t about having a huge home or a picture-perfect setup.
What young people need most is love, stability and a safe space to call their own.

If you’ve ever wondered whether fostering could be part of your life in 2026, we’re happy to chat and guide you through what’s really required.

Carer Quote of the Month 💜

Some foster journeys leave a lasting mark.

This month’s quote comes from Andy and Edel, who shared a lovely memory about a young girl they cared for as a teenager:

“Watching her grow in confidence was one of the greatest joys we’ve ever had. She’ll always have a place in our family.”

Her story is full of resilience, new beginnings, and bonds that didn’t end when she moved on.
It is a reminder of the lasting impact a caring home can have.

At Orchard Fostering, you are never on your own.

Our carers have access to a comprehensive training library that covers the real challenges young people may face, from understanding behaviour to supporting them through stress, anxiety, or major transitions.

There are also sessions on LGBTQ+ awareness, neurodiversity, and building connection through play and storytelling.
Every course is designed to help you feel informed, confident and supported.

If you would like access to the training library, please get in touch with your link worker.

Our story

Established in 2008, we are the largest Irish-owned independent foster care agency. More than a decade later, we have close to a hundred wonderful foster carer families that provide excellent care for their foster children. Our mission is our dedication and genuine passion for child welfare and supporting carers. We pride ourselves on knowing our carers and recognising the contribution they make towards a lasting difference in the lives of the children in their care. We have a multi-disciplinary team of over 30 staff. Fully qualified and locally-based, our social work, social care and therapy teams are available to support our carers and to ultimately to achieve the best outcomes for the foster children in their care. Importantly our dedicated and experienced staff are available through our out of hours call service, giving our carers the peace of mind that they can access support at any time should the need arise. We’ve been building brighter futures for children and young people for over a decade.
