After weeks of preparation, scan appointments, blood tests, carefully timed medication and detailed guidance, the day of egg collection has arrived. It’s natural to feel a mix of emotions.

From the moment you arrive, you’ll be supported by a dedicated team. Our healthcare assistant and nurses will help you get settled, guide you through the process, answer any questions, and make sure you feel at ease and informed before the procedure. The doctor performing the egg collection will be supported by a consultant anaesthetist, who will ensure you remain comfortable throughout.

Behind the scenes, our embryologist will be ready in the lab to carefully assess and care for the eggs as soon as they are collected. They play a vital role, ensuring that everything is handled with precision and attention.

After the procedure, you will rest in recovery with our nursing team until you feel ready to go home. Before you leave, our nurses will provide clear aftercare advice and let you know when to expect further updates.

Our priority is to make the experience as calm, safe and reassuring as possible.

On International Childhood Cancer Day🎗️we are proud to collaborate with the Irish Cancer Society and Children’s Health Ireland on The Childhood Cancer Fertility Project.

Each year in Ireland around 200 children are diagnosed with cancer, the treatments for which can cause lifelong damage to fertility, seriously impacting their future chances of ever starting a family of their own.

A partnership between The Irish Cancer Society, Children’s Health Ireland and Merrion Fertility Clinic aims to ensure that, where possible, lifesaving treatment for children does not come at the cost of their future dreams of parenthood.

New publication in ‘Human Reproduction’

“Contribution of endometrial microbiome to inflammation-mediated infertility in women undergoing ART”

Fascinating paper from Dr. Federica Giangrazi and the reproductive immunology team at Trinity College Dublin and Merrion Fertility Clinic.

Their latest study in Human Reproduction explores how the endometrial microbiome may shape local immune responses that are critical at the point of embryo implantation. It shows that women who don’t achieve pregnancy after ART tend to have a more diverse uterine microbial community with fewer lactobacilli, and that microbial metabolites like butyrate can influence epithelial barrier function and inflammatory signalling in the endometrium.

This adds important detail to our understanding of reproductive immunology and highlights how host–microbiota interactions might affect fertility outcomes.

Today is World Cancer Day.

Every year in Ireland, around 200 children under 18 are diagnosed with cancer. While treatment can be lifesaving, it can also affect future fertility.

At Merrion Fertility Clinic, we work closely with the Irish Cancer Society and Children’s Health Ireland to offer fertility preservation to young people before they begin cancer treatment. Together, our aim is simple: to make sure that surviving cancer does not mean losing the chance to start a family one day.

Our dedicated CAYA team (Children, Adolescents and Young Adults) supports patients and families at every stage of this journey. Preserving fertility cannot change a diagnosis, but it can remove one worry at an incredibly difficult time and offer hope for the future, for patients and for their families.

Merrion Fertility Clinic at ‘Fertility 2026’ in Edinburgh.

Our team attended Fertility 2026 in Edinburgh, a valuable few days spent connecting with colleagues across the fertility community, listening to fantastic presentations and keeping up to date with current research and clinical practice.

We're very proud of our Clinical Team for their strong contribution to the programme and the quality of their research presentations.

Dr. Roisin McConnell:

🔵 How much do doctors know about fertility?

🔵 State funded IVF: time to look at male obesity?

🔵 Predictive value of anti-Müllerian hormone in assisted human reproduction: a retrospective cohort study.

🔵 Public AHR: the face of Irish infertility?

Dr. Niamh Fee:

🔵 Low anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) level as a marker of unsuccessful biopsy in patients planning preimplantation genetic testing.

🔵 Understanding patient perspectives on preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) in Ireland.

🔵 Fertility preservation in adolescent and young adult females prior to gonadotoxic treatment: an Irish experience.

Dr. Sarah Petch:

🔵 Single cell RNA sequencing revealing reduced expression of mitochondrial related genes in granulosa cells of women with diminished ovarian reserve.

Thank you to The Association of Reproductive and Clinical Scientists (ARCS), British Fertility Society (BFS) and Society For Reproduction and Fertility (SRF) for hosting such a well run and engaging event, and to everyone involved in making it a success. We look forward to building on what we have learned and continuing our work in fertility research and patient care.

We’re delighted to share that Abby, Fertility Nurse at Merrion Fertility Clinic, recently featured on the IANO Podcast alongside hosts Sheilah Broderick and Ada Kinneally.

In this episode, Abby discusses fertility preservation for children, adolescents and young adults diagnosed with cancer. She speaks about the fertility risks associated with cancer treatment, the options currently available in Ireland and the importance of timely support at the point of diagnosis. Abby also highlights the vital role nurses play in initiating early, compassionate conversations and supporting referral pathways that help protect future reproductive choices.

The discussion covers fertility preservation options for male and female CAYA (children, adolescents and young adult) patients, coordination and eligibility at diagnosis, sensitive communication with patients and families, multidisciplinary and psychosocial support.

We’re very proud to see Abby representing our clinic, sharing her expertise, and advocating for proactive fertility discussions, so that young people facing cancer have the information and support they need to make informed choices about their future.

We’re pleased to share this update from the UCD School of Medicine and to celebrate the work of our colleague, Dr. Niamh Fee.

Her newly published study in Human Fertility looks at how patients feel about the use of AI during fertility treatment. More than 200 patients took part, giving a clear picture of where they see potential value and where they still have reservations.

Many felt AI could support clinicians and embryologists in tasks such as administration and decision-making, but there was far less comfort with AI acting alone in areas such as embryo selection, semen analysis, or reporting scans. The findings underline the importance of keeping human expertise and empathy at the centre of care, even as new tools emerge.

This is one of the first studies to examine patient views in this space, and it offers an important perspective for anyone developing or applying AI in reproductive medicine.

We’re very proud of Niamh and delighted to see her work recognised.
