HSE Drug Trend Warning Ahead of St. Patrick’s Day
Today on RTÉ Radio 1 Morning Ireland, Nicki Killeen, HSE Emerging Drug Trends Manager, spoke about major changes in the drug market and the extra risks linked to powders and high‑strength drugs as we head into the St. Patrick’s Day festivities. https://www.rte.ie/radio/radio1/clips/22592054/
Nicki highlighted that:
New and more potent drugs are circulating across Ireland.
Powders being sold as “cocaine” may actually contain multiple substances, including ketamine or synthetic stimulants like 3‑MMC, increasing the risk of overdose or unpredictable effects.
Some powders found recently contained up to five different drugs in a single sample.
Young people are increasingly adding powders to drinks, which can lead to taking far more M**A or stimulants than intended.
Her key message is clear:
“Every bag is different, and the risks right now are high.”
The HSE is urging people to be aware of what’s happening in the market and to understand the dangers of high‑strength pills, powders, and crystals.
If you choose to use:
Start low, go slow
Avoid mixing substances
Know the signs of a drug emergency
Call for help immediately — Medics are your mates
Stay informed, look out for your friends, and keep yourself safe this St. Patrick’s weekend.

It is with profound sadness that we learned of the tragic death of a young 16-year-old girl who sustained catastrophic injuries following a collision involving a scrambler bike in the Scribblestown area of Finglas. The incident occurred on the Ratoath Road, as the young girl was using a pedestrian crossing. Despite the immediate response from Gardaí and emergency services, she sadly died in hospital on Sunday evening.

The Local Drugs Task Force and Safety Forum extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and the wider community. This devastating event highlights the urgent need for continued action to address the dangers posed by scrambler bikes and to improve road safety for all residents.

We remain committed to working with local authorities, community organisations, and law enforcement to prevent such tragedies in the future. We encourage anyone with information regarding this incident to come forward and assist the Gardai with their ongoing investigation.

Our thoughts are with all those affected at this difficult time.

Over the next few weeks we will be working with BroomBridge Educate Together National school to help young people build skills around relationships, influence and self esteem ⭐️⭐️

As part of our plan to provide greater support to schools and youth services, we will be organising a number of workshops and trainings so teachers and youth facing staff can have these conversations with young people in a structured and evidence based way.
