"If you fill your life with experiences, not things, then you’ll have stories to tell and not things to show. For me, memories and experiences are always the best things to have and something no one can ever take away from you." I have always had a strong desire to travel everywhere and anywhere from a very young age. I was then lucky enough to meet my now fiancé, Ronan, who shares the travel bug with me. We have always enjoyed travelling together, so after a city hopping holiday to the US, we made the decision to make a trip around the world in 2017, basing ourselves for a year in Australia on a working holiday. We would love to hear from fellow travelers about any suggestions that might have on things to do and places to see while we are exploring. Of course, if we can be of any help to anyone hoping to do a similar trip, we would be happy to help and give you any pointers you might need. Our travel adventures started with a midweek break to the west of Ireland together and is still continuing now. So far, our trips together have included Gran Canaria, Nottingham, Paris, San Francisco, Chicago & New York. Other trips which we have enjoyed, although not together, include Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, Rome, Argentina, Norway & Turkey.

Europe’s weather forecast has made for alarming reading for weeks now, with the mercury tipping over 40C even in northern countries. Meteorologists note that Spain and Portugal 7C hotter than normal for this time of year – reaching a potential 47C in Seville. The UK’s current (2019) record of 38.7C will probably be history this week. Temperature hit over 30C in Ireland already this week. So, it seems now is the time to share some great ways to keep cool.

This month’s theme is all about resilience and understanding how we can build skills that will help us to bounce back. We can’t always predict or control what life throws at us, but we can build a range of skills and nurture our resources to help us respond flexibly, effectively deal with challenges, recover more quickly and even learn and grow as a result.

This month’s theme is all about finding the joy in life, even when things are difficult. Research has shown that experiencing positive emotions in a 3-to-1 ratio with negative ones leads to a tipping point beyond which we naturally become more resilient to adversity. So, let’s train our brains to find the joy.

Let’s take the time to pause, breathe and really take in what’s all around us. This month we’re encouraging you to take some time to look within. Learning to be more mindful and aware can do wonders for our well-being in all areas of life – like the way we eat, the things we notice or our relationships. It helps us get in tune with our feelings and stops us dwelling on the past or worrying about the future – so we get more out of the day-to-day. It can also help us identify what we’re grateful for, which has been proven to help boost your happiness levels!

Valentine’s Day is here and it’s time to show a little extra love to the people you care about. But whether you’re single or take, it’s important to pamper yourself with the same kind of love and kindness that you would shower on anyone else. Being kind to ourselves lowers anxiety and helps foster grit and resilience. In addition, cultivating self-love also helps decrease your stress levels significantly. Besides lowering your stress levels, other key physical health benefits of practicing self-compassion include an increased level of the ‘happy hormones’.

It is for good reason that Ireland is known as “The Land of Saints and Scholars”. In the 5th century CE, with the Roman Empire’s collapse, Europe was in a state of serious intellectual and social decay as its institutions crumbled. Ireland’s institutions could continue to prosper and evolve without interruption , thanks in no small part to our insulated location on the western shores of Europe. This led to a period of intellectual, religious, and artistic superiority that has been called ‘Ireland’s Golden Age’. It is during this period Ireland earned the title ‘Insula Sanctorum et Doctorum – The Island of Saints and Scholars’.

In The Land of Saints and Scholars, Dublin is home to a number of great authors, such as Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, Jonathan Swift, Samuel Beckett, Bram Stocker, Roddy Doyle and Maeve Binchy. To celebrate a city and island full of wonderful authors and books, here are my top bookshops in Dublin.

We need each other more than ever right now! This month let’s focus on reaching out to connect with others and doing our best to be a good friend. Our acts of kindness and connection ripple out and impact so many more people than we realise – and they also boost our own happy hormones too! In stressful times people around us may be feeling the strain, so let’s try to keep calm, take time to listen and show compassion.

It’s that time of year again. The so-called most depressing day of the year has arrived and with it comes your annual reminder that nobody likes Mondays – especially this one. But while it may be tempting to be consumed by Blue Monday’s gloomy reputation, I have put together some things that might take your mind off that new diet, grey weather, dark evenings and a frustratingly long wait until your next payday.

How can we start this new year happier? Things have certainly not been easy over the last year, and we are still in difficult and uncertain times. The best way to try to handle our difficult emotions and experiences is by focusing on what we can control. This month, we’re encouraging everyone to focus on small steps to try to boost happiness – for ourselves and others around us – to spread kindness and hopefully inspire others to do the same.
