Why might a repeat sample be necessary for the NIPT?

There needs to be enough fetal DNA in the maternal blood to be able to provide a result. If there is insufficient fetal DNA in the sample (which occurs in 2% of cases), another blood sample from the mother may be required. This will be processed in the laboratory at no extra charge.

Week 22 💛
Your baby is now about the size of a papaya – almost 11 inches long and close to one pound. A tiny newborn in the making! Their pancreas is starting to work, they can hear your voice and heartbeat, and even tiny tooth buds are forming.

You might notice more stretch marks, leg cramps or heartburn around now – all common, but always mention any concerns to your own doctor or midwife.

"I was here last week for the harmony test and the staff were lovely, were friendly. We had arrived late as we had another appointment in Holles St but the staff were completely understanding and we were still seen straight away instead of having to rebook which wouldn't be ideal as we travelled from Waterford."

Pregnancy Diary Week 17: How Is Your Baby Growing?
By this time, your baby starts swallowing and sucking. Her brain begins to control her heart which is now beating at a rate of 140-150 beats per minute. This could be twice as your heart rate! Also, the baby can now move her joints and her sweat glands are now getting functional. She is about the size of a pear.

Fat tissues or adipose are now forming in the baby’s body. These tissues are beneficial in regulating the metabolism and temperature of the body. Even the baby’s umbilical cord is lengthening and getting thicker. The brain is also developing the baby’s sense of touch, smell, taste and sight. If you are having a baby girl, please be informed that her ovaries are now producing millions of egg cells (primordial) which can develop into actual eggs later on!

Week 19 of Pregnancy: What to Expect

You’re approaching the halfway point! At 19 weeks, your baby is about the size of a mango. This is often when expectant parents begin to feel baby’s first movements — a special milestone.

A detailed anatomy scan around this time provides valuable insights into your baby’s development and may also reveal their s*x, if you wish to know.

"I attended Merrion Ultrasound for my 20 week scan. The clinic itself is lovely and I felt lovely and relaxed before being called for my scan. The staff were very friendly and I wasn't left waiting too long. The scan itself was a great experience. It's always a worrying time but I was made to feel completely at ease. I felt very comfortable and I was so impressed by how thorough the scan was, how clearly everything was explained and how much I could see! At every step the baby's health was explained and I really appreciated the reassurance throughout. A very positive experience!" Q: Who can have the NIPT test?

A: NIPT can be ordered by healthcare professionals for women with pregnancies of at least 10 weeks’ gestational age. This test can be requested for any singleton or twin pregnancy, including those conceived naturally or by IVF using the patient’s own egg or a donor egg.

Note that, in twin pregnancies, s*x chromosome (X and Y) analysis can determine fetal s*x but not s*x chromosome conditions. This test is not suitable in the case of a vanishing twin. The s*x of twins will be reported as one result. If male, one or both of the twins will be male. If female, both twins will be female.

The test does not assess risk for mosaicism, partial trisomies or translocations.
