Belly Breathing

During pregnancy it's important to practice deep yogic belly breathing. This breath work practice has many benefits that will leave you feeling more relaxed and less stressed. It can be used at any time throughout the day and is also a great tool to use for relaxation during labour & birth.

✨Breathing deep into the belly area helps us to relieve tension from the centre of our body.

✨It encourages our parasympathetic nervous system to switch on and helps us shift to a state of healing & relaxation.

✨It's beneficial for pain regulation.

✨Decreases stress response & fear.

✨Triggers our relaxation response.

Come to sit in a comfortable seated position.

Start by taking a deep breath in & out of the body.

If you like you can place your hands on your belly.

Take a moment to connect with your baby & your changing body.

As you breathe in feel your belly expanding outwards.

As you breath out gently hug baby back towards your spine.

Continue this practice for 5 - 10 minutes.

When you feel ready, come back to your normal breath and take a moment to observe how your body feels.

Malasana

Garland pose / Malasana or Yogi Squat is a great pose for opening your hips, stretching the groin, ankles and releasing tension from your lower back.

This modified version is a great pose for and one to use during as it helps to open your , ready for your 's decent.

Stand with your feet about mat width apart, bend your knees and lower your tailbone toward the floor. Keep your chest upright and the crown of your head reaching up toward the ceiling. If your heels don't touch the floor, don't worry, you can stand on a blanket.

Once you're comfortable bring your hands together at the centre of your chest pressing your elbows against the inside of your knees. Hold for 5 or 6 breaths.

For extra support you can place a stack of blocks or bolster under your , you may also like to rest your back against the wall. (Photo2) Alternatively keep your hips lifted high and support your upper body by placing your hands on your thighs. (Photo3)

For a more advanced version you might enjoy a gentle twist by reaching your right hand up toward the ceiling allowing your left to extend toward the floor. Repeat on the other side. (Photo4)

Rest & Relaxation

So often being told to relax causes us to panic. We live day to day rushing around using busyness as a sign of success. Taking a break, we feel like we're falling behind, or wasting precious hours.

I find I have to make a conscious effort to rest and relax, defaulting too easily to always being busy.

Yoga has taught me many techniques that help me rest, and understand the importance of pausing and checking in.

Breathwork, meditation, relaxation scripts, yoga nidra, music, aromatherapy - just some of the wonderful tools this practice encourages us to use.

Throughout your but also throughout & and are so important.

✨In this week's class we took the time to . If anyone would like a link to the recording please get in touch.
