Knee to wall test ✅

Regaining ankle range of motion is an important milestone post ankle sprain. When initial swelling settles down it is important to regain dorsiflexion for optimal functioning of the ankle. ❗️

A history of repetitive ankle sprains often leaves the patient with an obvious ankle dorsiflexion deficit compared with the non injured side. One simple way that I use to measure this is the ‘knee to wall’ test (once there is no additional calf injury). The minimum measure to have a functioning ankle should be at least 5cm but optimal should be closer to 10cm. ✅

Swipe to see an example of how repetitive poorly rehabbed ankle sprains in the past has left this patient with a 4cm difference in mobility. Goal setting for this patient will initially focus on restoring the mobility of the ankle before moving on to higher level rehab. ❌

Ankle sprains are one of the most common injuries to occur in field and court sports.
🦶🦵

There are 3 types of ankle sprains as seen here in the first graphic. The most common type of ankle sprain is a lateral (outside) sprain which usually occurs when the foot is plantarflexed (toes pointing down) with inversion. Because there is more mobility on the lateral (outside) of the ankle this is the most common site of injury and generally accounts for 80-85% of general ankle sprains and is commonly seen in football, gaa, rugby, basketball and tennis.
🏀 ⚽️ 🎾

Sprains to the medial (inside) of the ankle are much less common and are usually more severe. They are often associated with other bony injuries such as fractures. Medical imagining such as X-ray or MRI may be indicated in these injuries and occasionally surgical intervention is required.
🏥🏥🏥

High ankle sprains or syndesmosis sprains can also occur but again are less common than lateral ankle sprains. The most common mechanism of injury requires the foot to have excessive dorsiflexion (knee over toe)and or excessive external rotation. This type of injury can occur skiiing due to the fact the ski boot fixes your foot into a dorsiflexed position. This type of injury is often missed and can be a little slower to heal.

As with all injuries the key to recovery is control swelling, pain and inflammation initially and then progress to restore range of motion, strength and function. Physios will be able assess and guide you through this process to get you back doing what you love 😊

Here Hannah is doing Single leg Squats with 20kg and is working towards 27.5kg which she can comfortably do on the non operated side. Blood flow restriction recruits more type 2 muscle fibers and can be helpful for building single leg strength and hypertrophy post operatively.

Sleep is one of the most important ways to recover from high intensity sports and is a natural and legal performance enhancer. 😴 It is often overlooked by athletes in favour of more 'trendy' recovery modalities.
🔹🔹🔹

gave a fantastic talk on the importance of sleep on recovery at the conference in over the weekend the discussed the increased injury risk associated with consistently reduced sleep patterns.
🔹🔹🔹

Reducing caffeine intake in the afternoon, establishing good sleep such as a consistent bed time, reducing light from phones/laptops and practicing mindfulness are effective ways at improving sleep quality and quantity. Look to get the simple stuff right 😴😴

How many hour sleep do you get? 🧘🧘🧘

This week's Monday movement is a plank variation.
Doing a plank on a Swiss ball will further challenge your core stability and makes a nice change from just a regular plank.
Nice exercise to work abdominals and shoulder stabilisers ✔️
Take your time getting on and off the ball! 🤸🏼‍♂️
