Pat Aherne has transformed his herd health and fertility, whilst reducing antibiotic use. He has done this through a holistic approach learned over the last 10 years.

He leads the way in Ireland and the UK as a homeopath farmer. Pat started to explore a more unconventional approach to farming when he had a major outbreak of mastitis about ten years ago, with sixteen cases being treated at one time.

Pat said
“I remember coming into the parlour one morning and feeling like I was going into a war against nature, and that I wasn’t winning the battle.”
Amazingly he did get on top of the problem but swore that he would never subject his cows to the same level of antibiotic treatment again.
He said that it was “unsustainable economically” as well as “taking its toll on both man and beast.”
The health of his herd improved so much that it led to a string of Coop milk quality awards for supplying the best quality milk to Dairygold Co-op throughout 2016.

It’s thanks to farmers like Pat that we have access to meat and dairy low in toxic residue.

A 2020 study published in Nature Communications, which analyzed the impact of common medications on the composition and metabolic function of the gut bacteria, showed that of the 41 classes of medications. Researchers found that 19 were associated with changes in the microbiome, most notably antibiotics, proton pump inhibitors, laxatives, and metformin. http://ms.spr.ly/6182SLSSo
