You wouldn't manage your building's HVAC system using a snapshot from last year so why are you doing it with accessibility?

If you manage a global real estate portfolio, relying on point-in-time accessibility audits is an operational blind spot.

Buildings are not static.

Floors are refitted, wayfinding is updated and desks are moved.

An audit tells you where your building was accessible six months ago, but tells you nothing about the risks you carry today.

We recently published a breakdown of why managing physical spaces at scale requires living data.

"Everyone else swipes and walks in, I have to wait for a guard to unlock the side gate.".

The first interaction an employee has with your building shouldn't be asking for permission to enter.

Let's talk about one of the most common physical hurdles in corporate real estate: The Security Turnstile.

Modern offices love sleek, glass speed lanes in the lobby. But standard speed lanes are often too narrow for a wheelchair, a mobility scooter, or an employee with a service dog.

So what happens?
The employee has to wait. They have to wave down a security guard, wait for them to finish what they are doing, and get a manual override to open the wider delivery or visitor gate.

Meanwhile, their colleagues just swipe their badges and walk straight through to the elevators.

This might seem like a minor logistical hiccup to a Facilities Manager. But to the user, it is a daily reminder that the building wasn't designed for them.

Accessibility isn't just about whether someone can physically get inside the building. It’s about whether they can get inside independently. When your physical security measures strip away autonomy, you are creating a two-tier employee experience.

Neurodiversity Celebration Week is a great time to ask: How much cognitive friction does your building cause before 9:00 AM?

A building can be physically compliant, but is it cognitively exhausting?

When your building is unpredictable and hard to understand, it drains your talent's energy before they even reach their desk.

True inclusive design requires predictability. It means someone can walk into your lobby for the first time and instantly know where they are, where they need to go and how to get there without having to ask for help.

Next time you walk into your corporate HQ, look at it through the eyes of a first-time visitor. Is your building intuitive, or does it require a manual?

It’s Neurodiversity Celebration Week.

Are we celebrating the people, but ignoring the environment we force them to work in?

We see a lot of great panels and awareness campaigns this week. But for a neurodivergent employee, the real test of your culture happens when the webinar ends and they have to go back to their desk.

👉 The harsh, unadjustable fluorescent lighting.

👉 The open-plan echo chamber.

👉 The free desk policy that removes all routine and predictability.

These aren't just minor annoyances. For many autistic or ADHD employees, navigating this sensory minefield requires immense energy, that should be spent doing their actual jobs.

You can't fix cognitive accessibility with a one-off HR policy. You fix it by understanding the sensory profile of your physical spaces and managing them with living data.

This week, take a walk through your office. How does it sound? How does it feel?

Stop guessing and start measuring.

A passing grade on an audit doesn't mean your workplace is inclusive, it just means it was inclusive on the day the auditor visited.

A consultant walks the floor, checks the boxes and issues a PDF.

And then what happens a month later?
A heavy plant pot gets moved in front of the ramp.
The quiet room gets repurposed as a loud collaborative space.

The audit still says you’re accessible, but the lived experience of your employees says you aren't.

If we want to turn our employees' lived experiences into systemic change, we can't rely on a static snapshot.

We need continuous visibility. That is how you prove impact, not just intent.

We were once in a bank branch where the manager was walking through an accessibility assessment on a tablet, reading the questions aloud as she moved through the space.

One question asked: "Is there glare on the ATM screen?"

Before she could answer, three customers in the queue—all wearing glasses—spoke up immediately: "Yes, it’s actually very hard to read."

In that moment, accessibility stopped being a checklist from Head Office and became a real customer experience issue.

Digital tools don't just measure compliance; they educate teams.

They help staff see their workplace through a different lens, whether it’s the glare on a screen or a senior citizen needing a chair while they wait.

Silence is an accessibility feature. 🤫

For a neurodivergent employee, a noisy open-plan office isn't just distracting.

It can be physically painful and exhausting.

When you create a dedicated Quiet Zone for neuroinclusion, everyone wins.

The introvert who needs to recharge? Supported.
The deep-work coder? Supported.
The anxious team member? Supported.

You don't need to rebuild the walls, you just need to designate the space.

Does your office have a true Quiet Zone? (Headphones don't count).

Accessibility is just quality control for the physical world.

When a website link is broken, we call it a bug.

When a building door is too heavy to open, we call it unfortunate and ignore it.

Why the double standard?

If a user cannot use your space, your space is broken.

Shift the mindset, fix the bug.
