After approximately 19 months teaching online, tomorrow is the start of a return to in person teaching (albeit a hybrid version as some clients will remain online).

Looking forward to teaching with people in the same room as me!!

And of course none of this would continue to happen without the loyal support of my clients so thank you 🙏🏼 .

This timetable is valid from 20th October until 21st December (no classes 25th - 31st October).

A little time lapse to show what a mum and baby Pilates class incorporates.

A bonus (at no additional charge 😂) to the class is hearing my rhymes and occasional songs!!

Family exercise

Instilling a love of exercise is so important. This morning myself and my extended family (husband, brother, SIL and children) all did one of my cardio Pilates classes.

The benefits of exercise include:

- Improved self esteem
- Improved mood
- Better sleep quality
- More energy
- Reduced stress and anxiety
- Reduced risk of dementia
- Lower risk of osteoporosis
- Smaller risk of hip fractures
- Lower risk of falls among older adults
- Less likely to develop some chronic diseases (such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke and some cancers)

Ideally, adults should try to achieve a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise per week. Moderate intensity exercise is any exercise that raises your heart rate, causes faster breathing and makes you feel warmer). There is evidence to show that the benefits from vigorous intensity exercise can be even greater.

Happy exercising 🏃🏼‍♀️🏋🏼‍♀️

Strength (resistance) training is really important to include into your weekly exercise regime.

The first 35 years of life are crucial for building bone mass so get your little people (especially pre-pubescent children) out exercising with high intensity loading forces (eg. Jumping, skipping, running and gymnastic type exercises) to set them up for later life.

After 35, bone loss occurs gradually until the menopause in women, then it appears to occur more rapidly for a number of years. After 60, 1 in 2 women and 1 in 3 men in the UK will suffer an osteoporotic fracture.

One of the roles of exercise is to minimise age related decline and research shows that we should be participating in 3-5 weight bearing endurance activities per week as well as 2-3 resistance sessions (ACSM, 2020).

Another topic which we touch on in class, is signs of a hypotonic pelvic floor. It can be a sign that muscles are weak but it is not always the case as it can be a timing or recruitment issue.

Hypotonic pelvic floor signs:

- Leaking with sneezing, coughing, jumping or heavy lifting

- Trouble controlling wind

- Trouble with keeping tampons in

- S*x “not feeling like it used to before children”

- Heaviness or pressure feeling

- Low back pain, hip pain, pelvic pain

To help increase pelvic floor muscle tone you should work on your kegels. 10 x 10 second holds and 10 fast or quick contractions but be mindful of also taking time to relax your pelvic floor between contractions as you could potentially tip into a tight pattern if not careful.

If you are not seeing improvements with consistent kegels and attendance in classes, I encourage all clients to see a women’s health physiotherapist.

Please chat to me after class if you want any advice or me to point you in the right direction of a physiotherapist for more help.
