Bad back, bad golf, bad times…

World No. 9 Will Zalatoris had his season cut short by ā€œtwo herniated discsā€ in his lower back, causing him to miss the lucrative Fed Ex Cup playoffs and Presidents Cup. A bummer after what had been an amazing season for him…

It’s not his first back injury that resulted in him missing a big event, as he withdrew from last years Open championship after Round 1, citing back pain after hitting a shot out of heavy rough…

To have two significant lower back injuries is a bit concerning for any golfer, but Will Zalatoris is only 24 years old, and physically likely in the prime of his life.

I have attached a screenshot of a swing from YouTube. Now I know zero about Will Zalatoris’ condition apart from what reported in the media, nor and I would never try diagnose someone’s condition in a public forum…

I wanted to highlight the amount of twisting (rotation) and extension (bending backwards) his lower back has to do when he hits the ball. And he swings at 120mph+. So there’s a lot of pressure through his lower back, and it’s not surprising that injury can follow in this area…

The way the modern swing is constructed with a very stable base and lots of twisting and coiling (sometimes called the X-Factor), coupled with the rush to gain speed and power, could very well be leading to more problems like this in the future…

11 Hamstring injuries already…..and only 24!

Here is an interesting article about Cork footballer SeĆ”n Powter and his ongoing battle with hamstring problems. It is an insight into how even with some of the best sports medicine and rehab advice in the country, he’s still struggling big time…

His frustration, and often desperation is clear through the article:

ā€œIt was hugely frustratingā€¦ā€; ā€œThey were tight before it but it was just ā€œget through this gameā€¦ā€; ā€œI was 30 minutes awayā€¦ā€

This lad has likely done more reps of muscle strengthening and stretching this year than I have had hot dinners. Yet, here he was again reduced to limping off the field.

There is a famous quote attributed to Einstein: ā€œ The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different resultsā€¦ā€

My approach to chronic hamstring injuries is different. It involves a root and branch analysis to find the problems that continue to linger on and on. It can get you on the field and back to your best in a very short space of time…

Yikes, not a good look here at all from Ireland the Ireland medical team this morning with a lot of questions to be asked on why Jeremy Loughman allowed to return to play (or even do a head injury assessment in the first place…

World Rugby has brought in a new mandatory 12 day concussion stand down protocol this month. Whilst it obviously is a good thing for ensuring players don’t return too early, I am also concerned that the 12 days may deter players (and maybe staff) from making a decision that makes them miss 12 days of action (and in this case almost the whole NZ Tour)…

Remember, this isn’t a rugby problem, it’s happening in hurling, soccer, gaelic football as well…

Mind yourselves, and take care of your head and brain. You only get one of them and it’s pretty important!

Are you sick of having back pain when playing golf?

Having too much weight/pressure in your heels results in your centre of gravity moving toward the back of the body, and reduces your ability to rotate.

The accompanying video shows a really simple way of checking where your weight is at address. If you jump up from your start position and you fall backwards, your weight was in your heels. When you jump and land in the same place, this is much more efficient weight distribution, and less stressful on your lower back…

Why your back hurts when standing, and how to fix it…

When standing still for a while, not really moving and looking straight ahead, it’s very common to have a lot of pressure, tension and pain at the bottom of your spine…

This isn’t as a result of having weak or tight muscles, bad posture, wrong shoes etc…

It’s a direct result of the WAY YOU HAVE CHOSEN TO STAND (ie your standing technique)…

So, modify your standing technique and reduce the pressure and pain at your lower back…

This video shows a fool-proof way to help minimise this problem. By moving to a wider stance, you distribute the pressure away from the lower back and into the pelvis, hips and thighs…

It’s pretty simple but very effective…

Follow this up with a couple of simple rehab movements to get your back feeling more mobile and stronger, and you’ll begin to forget all about your back woes…
