Exercise and immunity
Battling another cough or cold? Feeling tired all the time? You may feel better if you take a daily walk or follow a simple exercise routine a few times a week.

Information
Exercise helps decrease your chances of developing heart disease. It also keeps your bones healthy and strong.

We do not know exactly if or how exercise increases your immunity to certain illnesses. There are several theories. However, none of these theories have been proven. Some of these theories are:

Physical activity may help flush bacteria out of the lungs and airways. This may reduce your chance of getting a cold, flu, or other illness.
Exercise causes change in antibodies and white blood cells (WBC). WBCs are the body's immune system cells that fight disease. These antibodies or WBCs circulate more rapidly, so they could detect illnesses earlier than they might have before. However, no one knows whether these changes help prevent infections.
The brief rise in body temperature during and right after exercise may prevent bacteria from growing. This temperature rise may help the body fight infection better. (This is similar to what happens when you have a fever.)
Exercise slows down the release of stress hormones. Some stress increases the chance of illness. Lower stress hormones may protect against illness.
Exercise is good for you, but, you should not overdo it. People who already exercise should not exercise more just to increase their immunity. Heavy, long-term exercise (such as marathon running and intense gym training) could actually cause harm.

Studies have shown that people who follow a moderately energetic lifestyle, benefit most from starting (and sticking to) an exercise program. A moderate program can consist of:

Bicycling with your children a few times a week
Taking daily 20 to 30 minute walks
Going to the gym every other day
Playing golf regularly
Exercise makes you feel healthier and more energetic. It can help you feel better about yourself. So go ahead, take that aerobics class or go for that walk. You will feel better and healthier for it.

There is no strong evidence to prove that taking immune supplements along with exercising lowers the chance of illness or infections.

Coronavirus Daily Update From Ironworx Enfield
Friday 13th March 2020

Hey Everyone,

Thank you for your continuous support and for all the messages I’ve had to support me and the business, it means a lot to know how strong our community is. I know it’s uncertain times but we can pull together to support each other in this current climate.

We at Ironworx can report that as of 13th March we have had 0 cases of Coronavirus confirmed and we will continue to keep you in the loop on this.

Further updated facts and figures can be found here:

Ironworx is still open for business!

Continuing on from yesterday our hygiene policy remains the same (as below) and we are now suggesting that you Bring a Towel to Workout, you can use this to line any shared equipment. Although we are continuing to anti-bac and clean all our equipment whilst encouraging our community to do the same, everyone using their own towels will make a difference in to how people feel about using shared equipment.

We still want to stress that Whilst we understand the health scare we also understand that it’s important to remain fit and healthy especially when your body needs to fight off disease.

Whilst trying to find further information on the spread of the virus I came across this great article which helped to dispel some of the niggling anxiety the virus is bringing to us all:

Do gym-goers actually need to worry about their daily workout? The short answer is no, says Dr. Paul Sax, medical director of the division of infectious diseases at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. “The gym is not a place that’s necessarily riskier than other communal areas,” Sax says. “I wouldn’t say there’s anything particular about people sweating that makes them more contagious.”

People tend to worry about communal places and objects because they fear coming into contact, directly or indirectly, with someone who can get them sick. Viruses that cause illnesses such as COVID-19 and the seasonal flu are often spread via direct exposure to respiratory droplets expelled in the sneezes or coughs of a sick person, but they can also live on surfaces and inanimate objects for days at a time. It’s logical to think that the more people who touch shared objects—like, say, weights and cardio machines—the higher the risk that someone could leave behind a virus, potentially passing it on to others.

But this type of surface contamination has not been of much worry to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention during the COVID-19 outbreak. “Transmission of coronavirus occurs much more commonly through respiratory droplets than through contact with contaminated surfaces,” the agency wrote in its guidance about voting centers. And while mass gatherings are a point of concern, there is evidence that people may overestimate the likelihood of disease spread in shared spaces. For example, one 2011 study estimated that, if a flu pandemic hit New York City, only 4% of influenza transmissions would occur on the subway—even though that’s a place that inspires germ panic for many.

Time Magazine

However, as this is a respiratory disease we do advise that if you are affected you need to take the time to rest and recover properly. Take in lots of fluids and contact your doctor for advice by calling 111 and NOT visiting a surgery or hospital!

If you do encounter any health concerns please contact us as soon as possible so that we can be as transparent with our community as possible (insert contact details here)
