Yeah. I think it’s time we stop belittling the ā€œpicky eatersā€ and start recognising it for what it is…sensory sensitivity. I hear no end of mocking over my kids, particularly my son, who has quite a limited amount of safe foods.

But.

By not constantly forcing him to eat things I know he doesn’t like…he trusts me and is starting to try food he never would have before.

Strawberries are a new one for him, he very proudly came home telling me he now like strawberries after trying them at school 🄰

This isn’t a ā€œstarter packā€ these are accommodations.

Following on from last nights I thought it would be useful to have a quick guide of what to look for from an autism assessment. A note on the cost part: this is the typical range of a multidisciplinary assessment in Ireland. Meaning that at least two professionals have been involved in the assessment, Psychologist and OT or SLT. If someone is charging significantly less, it’s important to ask why that is.

Why can’t my neurodivergent child meet this expectation? (Might relate to behaviour, task initiation/completion, stuff at school, etc)

Start at the top white bubble and go until you reach a yellow.

This makes mentions of spoon theory and Autism as a dynamic disability. If you’re not familiar with those terms, check out my other illustration sets.

Note: I thought this image made a lot of sense. I’m sorry if this is just confusing for people. Also, it is absolutely terrible to try and read this properly on a tiny phone screen, so I apologise for that too. I tried 3 times to simplify, space it differently, and spread the decision tree over multiple slides and I absolutely couldn’t do it. I’ll have to create a far more straightforward version of this in future.

Also- parents should get a great neurodiversity-affirming speech therapist and OT to help them know how to support their kid. These professionals will help work out accommodations, teach how to model, work on regulation, and generally make you feel like you understand your kid more.

Additionally- this pic doesn’t cover everything. Kids with trauma may also have trouble meeting expectations. The takeaway message is that when kids don’t meet expectations- give them a break. It would rarely be by choice.

Finally, ā€˜kids do well when they can’ is wisdom from Dr. Ross Greene.
