I am delighted to announce that Liam will be joining the Empowerment Physio team in September. His diary will be open very soon. Check out his bio ⬇️

My name is Liam Clancy. I am a Sports Rehabilitation and Athletic Therapist at Empowerment Physiotherapy. I qualified as an Athletic Therapist in 2025 from SETU Carlow and completed my final placement under the guidance and supervision of Leanne. I am delighted to be treating people from all walks of life and improve how people feel and move in their own bodies. I share the values of empowerment physiotherapy in that education, and movement, is key for people with acute or chronic injuries. I am delighted to work with my clients to create a rehabilitation plan to attain both short- and long-term goals together.

Before beginning with Empowerment physiotherapy, I experienced life within professional sports as an Athletic Therapy assistant with the Oakland Athletics baseball organisation in Phoenix, Arizona. My experience within both settings gives me a wide perspective on injury prevention and treatment, not just in the sporting field, but also in everyday life. I strive to make rehabilitation a collaborative and empowering experience for everyone who walks through our doors.

I believe that every individual deserves a tailored approach, recognising the unique circumstances and goals they bring to their rehabilitation journey. My treatment strategies are grounded in empathy and collaboration, striving to empower clients through education, hands-on care, and progressive movement strategies. Whether working with high performing athletes or those seeking to restore daily function, my aim is to support lasting change and inspire confidence in each person’s ability to move well and live fully.

Aside from being an athletic therapist, I also work at badger and dodo which is a local boutique coffee roaster. I love staying active by playing hurling with Fermoy GAA and catching up with friends on the weekends. My long term goal is to apply for my masters in physiotherapy where I can continue to help more people in a wider array of settings.

I’m on maternity leave.

Thanks to everyone for their well wishes. Another little Barton baby is soon to arrive. It’s been eventful getting to this point but I do really appreciate all my patients support and encouragement (as always).
The clinic will remain open and be in the safe hands of Liam and Dylan.

See you all in September 👋🏼

A message from a recent client.

This lovely lady had pain since the summer of 2022. She had been to another therapist and was getting some relief but decided to get a second opinion.

My conclusion was that she had a frozen shoulder but with all frozen shoulders, it is imperative to get an X-ray of the joint as it’s impossible to say for sure why movement is restricted.

She did in fact have a frozen shoulder but also…..

Some effects of aging 👵🏼

Ever wondered why certain medications lose effectiveness if taken for a long time? There are many changes that occur to our organs which means they don’t work as well as they should 💊

Boss & Seegmiller (1981) state that subtle irreversible changes in organ function have been shown to occur by the 3rd and 4th decades of life which continues to progress with increasing age.

Cardiovascular system - cardiac output ⬇️ and there is an ⬆️ in myocardial stiffness possibly due to myocardium fibrosis.

Respiratory system - although lung capacity may remain constant, there is a gradual reduction in viral capacity per year. There are alterations in gas ventilation and perfusion which results in a decrease in arterial oxygen pressure.

Kidney function - kidney volume and weight decrease with age which influences the number of glomeruli and subsequent creatinine clearance. This affects the absorption of certain medications including penicillin. The diluting abilities of the kidneys deteriorates which can cause dehydration and hyponatremia (lower sodium levels in the blood).

Liver function - the liver decreases in weight by as much as 20% after the age of 50. Certain medications are metabolised more slowly by the liver in the elderly, and thus may be due to a decrease in the appearance, amount, or distribution of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum.
