From 11 to 14 weeks gestation your baby has reached a size where certain structural checks are possible.
An advanced early pregnancy scan at Galway Ultrasound Specialists will confirm the following:
• The pregnancy is correctly located in your womb
• Viability- a heartbeat is demonstrated
• Determine if it is a single or twin pregnancy & determine the chorionicity in a twin pregnancy (identical verses non-identical twins)
• Confirm your expected delivery date (accurately assessed by measuring the crown-rump length)
• Assess the amniotic fluid volume
• Assess the shape and structure of your baby's skull and brain and exclude conditions such as anencephaly.
• Assess that the abdominal wall has closed & the umbilical cord is inserting normally.
• Assess your baby's arms, legs, hands and feet.
• Some organs may be assessed including the baby's stomach, kidneys, bladder, spine, & heart. These organs are seen in more detail at 20 weeks however, certain conditions may be detected at an early scan.
• Measurement of the nuchal translucency.
The Nuchal translucency (NT) is the ultrasound appearance of a collection of fluid under the skin behind the fetal neck in the first-trimester of pregnancy. In fetuses with chromosomal abnormalities, cardiac defects and many genetic syndromes the NT thickness may be increased (fetal medicine foundation).

Men over 60 are at an increased risk of aortic aneurysms. An aortic aneurysm is a bulge in the large blood vessel that supplies the lower abdomen. If it ruptures, it will cause severe bleeding that is often fatal. An early pregnancy ultrasound gives you reassurance that all is well with your baby. Our scan will confirm a heartbeat and check that your baby is correctly positioned in your womb. We can also tell you if you are having twins. We can see the limbs moving at 9 weeks!

This is an ultrasound image of four gallstones. Gallstones are a common cause of abdominal back or even right shoulder pain, nausea and vomiting. Testicular Cancer Awareness Month

April is Testicular Cancer Awareness month. 180 men are diagnosed with testicular cancer every year in Ireland. Early detection is vital for best prognosis. Ultrasound is the most widely used test to diagnose any scrotal abnormalities as it is quick, painless and very accurate.

If you feel any lumps, bumps or pain, contact your GP as soon as possible and ask to be referred to Galway Ultrasound Specialists.


In support of this campaign, we are offering a reduced rate for testicular ultrasounds of €100 (normally €150) for the month of April. All scans are reported by Consultant Radiologists and returned to your GP within 24 hours.

This is a baby's heart at 20 weeks. Athough, it is the size of your fingernail, we can clearly see the four chambers, valves, walls and connections to the great arteries.
