10-Step Tinnitus Treatment Plan That REALLY Works

Step #1: An ENT Evaluation

Rule out any potential physical or medical causes of tinnitus. This is a great way to narrow-down causes.

Step #2: Healthy Hearing

Approximately 90% of those with tinnitus experience hearing loss of some kind. Treating hearing loss is an ideal step towards improving tinnitus as a whole. Test hearing and treat it accordingly.

Step #3: Medication Check

Medications should be reviewed and adjusted by a physician. Medication changes are a surprising cause of tinnitus for some.

Step #4: Environmental Sound Enrichment

Incorporating low-level background sounds like nature sounds or music can reduce tinnitus. Limit the brain’s perceptions of the tinnitus, and help it reduce tinnitus naturally.

Step #5: Habituation Training

Daily habitation sound therapy training helps the brain gradually reduce its awareness of tinnitus. Use a high-quality sound machine or smartphone app to get some relief.

Step #6: Customized Sound Therapy

Custom sound therapy devices worn on the ears are paramount to patient success. Program hearing aids based on Tinnitus Retraining Therapy protocols.

Step #7: Regular Coaching or Counseling Sessions

If you don’t address the psychological impact of tinnitus, results are limited. Work with patients to address anxiety, stress, and insomnia related to tinnitus. When you’re uncomfortable, refer to a specialist who can assist you in this area.

Step #8: Engage the Parasympathetic Nervous System

This indirect approach is more about relieving stress and tension to positively influence tinnitus perception. Consider relaxation, exercise, and calming activities.

Short, conscious breathing exercises throughout the day can help with managing moments of heightened awareness and stress. Calm the mind and ground into the body.

Step #10: Textbook Sleep Habits

Dedicate an hour before sleep to prepare the mind — ideally via sound therapy and a wind-down routine. This is especially useful for combating tinnitus-caused insomnia.
