Title: ‘I Know What To Do, So Why Can’t I Do It: Understanding How to Make Healthy Behaviours Stick’

Croí, the Heart & Stroke Charity, is delighted to announce a special public talk on tips for lifestyle change to support cardiovascular health, ‘I Know What To Do, So Why Can’t I Do It: Understanding How To Make Healthy Behaviours Stick’. This event features esteemed speaker Professor Michael Vallis, a Health Psychologist from Dalhousie University in Canada. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, November 22, 2023, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at the Croí Heart and Stroke Centre, Newcastle, Galway.

Cardiovascular disease is a significant health concern, impacting the lives of many individuals and their families. Prof Michael Vallis will provide valuable insights into the challenges people face when trying to adopt and maintain healthy behaviours to improve cardiovascular health. His expertise in the field of health psychology makes him the perfect guide for those seeking to make lasting changes in their lives.

This free event is open to anyone living with, or at risk of, cardiovascular disease, and individuals looking to enhance their cardiovascular health by incorporating and sustaining healthy habits and routines in their everyday lives. It may be of particular interest to those managing conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, individuals striving to maintain a healthy weight, or anyone who has experienced a stroke or cardiac event and is committed to making lifestyle changes for a healthier, happier, life.

Hosted by Dr Lisa Hynes, a Health Psychologist and the Head of Health Programmes at Croí, the event will feature a practical and inspiring presentation by Prof Michael Vallis, who will delve into the intricacies of behaviour change and the psychology behind it. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in a Q&A session and participate in discussions to gain further insight into effective steps for improving and maintaining cardiovascular health.

Tai Chi is often described as moving meditation. When the postures are more correct and one begins to first feel qi in the hands, another level of concentration is required to micro-adjust the body more internally to improve the feeling of qi and make it more clear and full. Higher levels can only be reached through being more calm and connected to oneself and the present moment. Some people find it hard to calm down by doing sitting meditation, so doing Tai Chi helps many people achieve a meditative state when moving.
Meditation is not only an excellent means to achieve deep rest, calm the mind, as distracting or worrying thoughts disappear while one practices and enters into the present moment, but also it is an effective way to train the mind to be sharply focused during mental activities in everyday life.
