๐Ÿ”Ž How to Assess the Severity of a Tendon Injury in Horses: Part 4

๐Ÿ”ด Severe Tendon Injury or Rupture

โžก๏ธ Ultrasound Findings:
- Damage: 50โ€“100% of CSA
- Major fibre disruption or full rupture

โžก๏ธ Clinical Signs:
- Often non-weight-bearing lameness
- Severe swelling, heat and obvious pain
- Common โ€œbowed tendonโ€ appearance
- Often caused by sudden overload, trauma, or overuse.

โžก๏ธ Prognosis:
- Poor prognosis to return to previous level of athletic function
- Exercise-based rehabilitation provided by EqueStride Tendon Support System can significantly shorten the rehabilitation time and improve fibre alignment, which contributes to a better quality of heal, improving the prognosis for returning to athletic function

๐ŸŸ  Moderate - Severe Tendon Injury

โžก๏ธ Ultrasound Findings:

- Damage: 30โ€“50% of CSA
- Large core lesion visible or loss of fibre pattern

โžก๏ธ Clinical Signs:

- Clear lameness and swelling
- Tendon loses significant strength and elasticity
- Often caused by sudden overload, trauma, or overuse.

โžก๏ธ Prognosis:

- Fair - good prognosis to return to work with correct rehab
- Reinjury is common and negatively affects the prognosis
- Controlled exercise and progressive loading are crucial

Donโ€™t forget to read our insightful article on EqueStride tendon & ligament injury management in Animal Therapy Magazine

"Tendon and ligament injuries are among the most common musculoskeletal issues in horses, particularly in performance and sport horses. Whether itโ€™s a strained suspensory ligament or a ruptured flexor tendon, these injuries have long been seen as career-ending, if not life-ending, for horses. For decades, treatment options have been limited to rest, hope, and time. But thatโ€™s changing, thanks to a breakthrough innovation: EqueStride."

Ziggyโ€™s Journey: From Setbacks to Success with EqueStride

"Ziggy sustained a field injury and was diagnosed with a Deep Digital Flexor Tendon (DDFT) tear on ultrasound. His rehabilitation journey was anything but smooth. Spooky hand walks, repeated re-injuries from spinning and slipping on the road, and overly enthusiastic turnout attempts kept setting us back to square one. Every time he left the stable, we were filled with dread.

A Google search led us to EqueStride, and thereafter, everything changed for the better! With the orthosis and weekly support calls from Andrew and Gloria, we began a structured 3-month recovery. Once we got the hang of fitting the device, it became quick and easy, and Ziggy accepted it without fuss.

EqueStride was a complete game changer. It gave us the confidence to safely manage roadwork and turnout, and Ziggy progressed steadily with no further setbacks. Even after he no longer needed the device daily, we kept it for a 2-mile walk to a new yard and herd turnout over 8 acres, again, with no reinjury.

Ziggy is now hacking out at walk, beginning a ridden rehab we never thought possible. Our original hope was simply for him to be field sound and comfortable in a herd. Seeing him under saddle again is a joy we didnโ€™t dare imagine.

Huge thanks to the EqueStride team for their support and expertise. We highly recommend them."

Thank you Helen, for your lovely words.

โ“A frequently asked questionโ“

๐Ÿ‘‰ What is EqueStrideโ„ข? Is it like a regular tendon horse boot?

๐Ÿ”ด The answer is: No

EqueStrideโ„ข is an adjustable therapeutic support device. It is not like any other regular tendon boot. It is designed to control the extension of the fetlock joint under load, providing graduated support during exercise-based tendon or ligament rehabilitation.

Studies confirmed (Smith et al. 2002) that it is the only device capable of resisting extension of the fetlock joint under loads experienced at walk (and higher gaits) compared to currently available simple protective boots or a thick Robert Jones-style bandage.

A recently published research (Pagliara et al. 2025) assessed twelve healthy horses during walk and trot, both without the device and with the EqueStride applied at two different settings. The joint motion was quantified using sensor-based measurements. The EqueStride device significantly reduced the fetlock joint motion, particularly at the highest support level, confirming the supportive effect of the device during rehabilitation.

๐Ÿ”Ž How to Assess the Severity of a Tendon Injury in Horses: Part 2

Assessment of the severity of a tendon injury most commonly happens through an ultrasound examination. The veterinary surgeon will assess:

Cross setional Area (CSA):
- measure the size of the tendon,
- assess the echogenicity (brightness) of the structure
Fibre Alignment Pattern:
- assess loss of fibre pattern or lack of paralell fibre alignment.

The cross sectional area (CSA) is also used to determine what percentage of the tendon structure is damaged.

๐ŸŸก Moderate Injury

โžก๏ธ Ultrasound Findings:
- Damage: 15โ€“30% of CSA
- Noticeable core lesion or hypoechoic region
- Fibre disorganization or loss of fibre pattern alignment is evident

โžก๏ธ Clinical Signs:
- Mild Lameness (may not be present or recurring and improves with rest)
- Mild swelling or localised heat
- Often caused by overuse or an acute overload

โžก๏ธ Prognosis:
- Good with early detection and appropriate rehabilitation plan
- Can progress to more severe injuries if left untreated
