How Acupuncture Can Relieve Pain and Improve Sleep, Digestion and Emotional Well-being,,

Acupuncture is a 3,000-year-old healing technique of Traditional Chinese Medicine. National Institutes of Health (NIH) documented and publicized acupuncture’s safety and efficacy for treating a wide range of conditions. Acupuncture is now covered by many insurance policies and is used most broadly to relieve pain. Acupuncture improves the body’s functions and promotes the natural self-healing process by stimulating specific anatomic sites--commonly referred to as acupuncture points, or acupoints. The most common method used to stimulate acupoints is the insertion of fine, sterile needles into the skin. Pressure, heat, or electrical stimulation may further enhance the effects. Other acupoint stimulation techniques include: manual massage, moxibustion or heat therapy, cupping, and the application of topical herbal medicines and linaments. Traditional Chinese Medicine is based on an ancient philosophy that describes the universe, and the body, in terms of two opposing forces: yin and yang. When these forces are in balance, the body is healthy. Energy, called "qi" (pronounced "chee") flows along specific pathways, called meridians, throughout the body. This constant flow of energy keeps the yin and yang forces balanced. However, if the flow of energy gets blocked, like water getting stuck behind a dam, the disruption can lead to pain, lack of function, or illness. Acupuncture therapy can release blocked qi in the body and stimulate function, evoking the body’s natural healing response through various physiological systems. Modern research has demonstrated acupuncture’s effects on the nervous system, endocrine and immune systems, cardiovascular system, and digestive system. By stimulating the body’s various systems, acupuncture can help to resolve pain, and improve sleep, digestive function, and sense of well-being. What happens during an acupuncture treatment? First, your acupuncturist will ask about your health history. Then, she will examine your tongue’s shape, color, and coating, feel your pulse, and possibly perform some additional physical examinations depending on your individual health needs. Using these unique assessment tools, the acupuncturist will be able to recommend a proper treatment plan to address your particular condition. To begin the acupuncture treatment, you lay comfortably on a treatment table while precise acupoints are stimulated on various areas of your body. Most people feel no or minimal discomfort as the fine needles are gently placed. The needles are usually retained between five and 30 minutes. During and after treatments, people report that they feel very relaxed. How many treatments will I need? The frequency and number of treatments differ from person to person. Some people experience dramatic relief in the first treatment. For complex or long-standing chronic conditions, one to two treatments per week for several months may be recommended. For acute problems, usually fewer visits are required, usually 4 - 6 visits in total. An individualized treatment plan that includes the expected number of treatments will be discussed during your initial visit. What conditions are commonly treated by acupuncture? Hundreds of clinical studies on the benefits of acupuncture show that it successfully treats conditions ranging from musculoskeletal problems (back pain, neck pain, and others) to nausea, migraine headache, anxiety, depression, insomnia, and infertility. Case-controlled clinical studies have shown that acupuncture has been an effective treatment for the following diseases, symptoms or conditions:

Acupuncture for Anxiety and Depression

Acupuncture has been shown to have effects of easing anxiety and depression. It has a range of mechanisms that work to this effect. It is safe to use in the long-term, avoiding any drug-related side-effects. On top of this, it is safe to use along-side said drugs. It is also useful for related symptoms, such as stress, lethargy, headaches, migraines and pain.

The World Health Organisation recommends acupuncture for depression and the more up to date, comprehensive review of acupuncture, from The Acupuncture Evidence Project recommends acupuncture for anxiety.

A systematic review for anxiety stated, ‘that acupuncture was an effective alternative therapy for generalized anxiety’ (Rui et al. 2016). It also noted acupuncture was as effective as drugs and safe. In the largest ever study conducted into acupuncture, The York study, acupuncture was found to clinically effective, safe and cost-effective for depression.

There are also preliminary positive findings for treating chronic anxiety associated with post-traumatic stress disorder, substance misuse, eating disorders, hyperventilation, asthma, insomnia, post-stroke, musculo-skeletal pain and various other conditions where anxiety has been measured as a secondary rather than primary issue.

Six things you didn't realise Acupuncture could treat

1 • Seasonal allergies
One well-researched effect of acupuncture is reducing inflammation throughout the body. Acupuncture stimulates chemicals that reduce swelling and quiet unwanted immune responses and allergic reactions.
Acupuncture also helps strengthen the digestive system, which can be a source of unrecognized inflammation, making allergies worse. With just a few weeks of regular treatment, acupuncture can help eliminate the symptoms of seasonal allergies.
2 • Digestive complaints
Gas, bloating, constipation or bowel changes are signs that there is something wrong in your digestive system. Acupuncture is known to regulate digestive function. In fact, there is an entire school of thought in Chinese medicine that treats the digestive system for any illness, based on the belief that when the gut functions properly, the entire system can maintain its balance.
3 • Sciatic pain
Sciatica is a terribly painful disorder caused by the compression of the sciatic nerve—a very long nerve that begins in the low back and branches down into each leg, continuing all the way to the feet. Those who experience it know sciatic pain is challenging to calm with over-the-counter medication. The pain can be felt anywhere along the nerve and keep you from enjoying daily life. Acupuncture can be incredibly useful in treating sciatic pain. I have seen a patient pain-free for the first time in years after only a few acupuncture sessions. It is definitely worth a try.
4 • Insomnia
Insomnia can come in many forms. Some people have difficulty falling asleep while others feel tired only to find that as soon as they lie down, their brains become active. Others have no trouble falling asleep, but wake up during the night—usually between 2-3 a.m.—and have trouble going back to sleep. Some people struggle with both falling and staying asleep. Properly placed acupuncture needles coupled with herbal medicine can be life changing for people who need to get more ZZZs.
5 • Anxiety, stress and depression
Maintaining a stable emotional state can be difficult, and for those people who all-too-often feel unsettled, acupuncture can help balance and regulate emotions. It stimulates the part of your nervous system that promotes a calm state of being. It can help you feel settled, grounded and positive. It also relaxes the brain and muscles, which reduces stress throughout the body.
6 • KIDS!
Many parents don't feel they have options other than antibiotics or over-the-counter drugs for common ailments like viral ear infections, eczema, constipation, colic, sleep disorders, allergies and behavioral issues. That's where Eastern medicine can come in. Chinese medicine, which has been safely treating children and adolescents for thousands of years, offers herbal medicine, acupuncture and non-needle techniques, such as pediatric massage, tuina and shoni shin, as natural options to complement Western medicine for our littlest patients.

This year, the Acupuncture Council of Ireland is taking the opportunity to highlight the supportive role of acupuncture for those undergoing cancer treatment. Clinical research suggests that acupuncture can provide clinical benefit for cancer patients with treatment related side effects such as nausea and vomiting, pain, post chemotherapy fatigue, dry mouth, stress and anxiety. Our acupuncturists and many cancer support centres use acupuncture to treat these and other symptoms. This short video highlights the work being undertaken in the ARC Cancer Support Centres in Ireland who offer free treatments to support those undergoing cancer treatment.
