I am a TCM Acupuncturist living in Kenmare. I graduated from the Lansdowne College of Acupuncture in 2012 and operate a Saturday clinic from Haven Pharmacy Brosnan's on Henry Street.

Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine that involves the insertion of thin needles into specific points on the body. It is based on the concept of energy flow, or "qi," that flows through pathways in the body called meridians. Acupuncture is believed to stimulate the body's natural healing process by balancing the flow of energy and promoting relaxation.

Acupuncture has been shown to be effective in managing various types of pain, including chronic pain, back pain, and migraines. The insertion of needles into specific points on the body is believed to stimulate the release of endorphins, which are natural painkillers.

Acupuncture may also help reduce inflammation and improve blood flow to the affected area, promoting healing. Additionally, acupuncture is a non-invasive and drug-free treatment option, making it a safe alternative for those who cannot tolerate medication or are looking to avoid potential side effects. Acupuncture can be used alone or in conjunction with other pain management therapies for optimal results.

Public Service Announcement

Just a friendly reminder to all readers. Please make sure that your GP / local medical practice has your correct contact details.
This is especially important for our Elders.

The Vaccine Rollout is only days away at this stage. GPs and medical secretaries are going to be flat to the mat, making phone calls and scheduling vaccinations. And they will be starting with people who were in their 60s before mobile phone use became widespread. I’m talking about your parents and grandparents, folks.

I’ve helped out at my dad’s office in the past, and it happens more often than you’d think, that it’s hard to contact a patient - they might’ve only given the doctor their landline number, for example, but they don’t have voicemail set up. Or they’ve changed their mobile number, but haven’t told the GP, so he can update the number on file.

Please check in with your relatives - and your local GP’s office - just to make sure everything’s up to date. It’s the small things that make a big difference.

Thanks everyone!
Sally

Asylum Seekers Update 18/11/2018

What a weekend!
…I think I filled my car three times, with donations of clothes and toys from people locally. I also filled two fifty-litre boxes with toiletries, and made a few runs up to Atlantic Lodge on Friday afternoon and evening, to share things out. I was invited for dinner, and ended up staying for two hours eating the most delicious biryani and having the craic with the residents. I wasn’t the only one; other locals who dropped up to say hello were also made welcome, fed and treated like royalty.

The local Saint Vincent de Paul has been inundated with clothes and toys. Inter Kenmare FC has been welcoming the residents of Atlantic Lodge with open arms. I’ve had text messages from people who want to offer art classes, from people who want to set up a collection at their place of work, I could be here all night telling you the different ways people have offered to help. It’s a beautiful thing to witness, this outpouring of goodwill and support.
So many donations have come in to the SVP, that Father Crean has made the Community Centre (FKA the Old Boys’ School) available for the next few weeks. Volunteers are needed this coming week, from 11am – 1pm Monday to Friday, to help sort, categorise and display what’s come in. Then we can start distributing things, and make sure they go where they’re most needed.

Please hold off on donating clothes and toys for now, everybody.

Here’s what we still need:
Clothes hangers
Toiletries, as before. Toilet Paper, baby wipes, shampoo, soap, shower gel, deodorant, disposable razors, shaving foam, body lotion, sanitary towels and tampons, please.
Warm hats for adults, please. Not seeing a lot of those coming in, and it’s freezing out there at the minute.
Warm shoes and boots, if you have them to spare, please. All sizes. There’s too many people up in Atlantic Lodge wearing flip flops. And shorts. I’m not joking. Any thermal underwear floating around in the back of the wardrobe? I can certainly find a good home for it. Send it along!

The kitchen up there isn’t well equipped, unfortunately. The residents are given an allocation of one plate, one cup, one spoon, one fork, one knife each, are you getting the picture? It’s tricky enough to flip a pancake over with a knife, or to drain off your spaghetti without a strainer/colander. Or to do the dishes without washing up liquid, come to think of it.
So kitchen things would also be very much appreciated. Saucepans, serving dishes, pyrex dishes, serving spoons, spatulas, vegetable peelers, colanders…. And cleaning materials. Washing up liquid, scouring pads, brillo pads, j-cloths, dettol, domestos, windolene - you get the idea.

You can drop off any donations this coming week, 11am – 1pm Monday – Friday, to:
The Community Centre
(FKA The Old Boys’ School)
Shelbourne St

Please stop and say hello to our volunteers from Atlantic Lodge, too! Some of them will be there, and they’re eager to meet people and make friends, and especially to help out around town in whatever way they can. Most of all they want to thank you.
They’re so grateful for your help.

Thanks for reading, and have a great week!

Asylum Seekers Update 15/11/2018

I popped up to Atlantic Lodge this afternoon to say hello and to see if / how I could help to make our newest neighbours feel at home. I spoke with Vlad at Reception, who was very gracious and thankful to all the people who had already been in with donations of clothes and toys for the children. We had a long chat and I took notes – some of which I will share with you now, as I know of so many folks locally who want to help. Firstly, they’re here with nothing more than the clothes they stand up in. They have no cash, so they can’t buy anything at all. They can order their own food, within the system that they’re in, and they have cooking facilities. They’re working with a “points” system at the moment, to purchase their food and supplies, if that makes sense.

They were worried that we would be protesting against their arrival.
Think about that for a minute, everybody, please.

They want to learn English. Some of them already have great English, but by no means all. They want to be here. They’re thankful to be here. They want to fit in. They would love to join our local sports clubs and other groups. Anybody from Kenmare Shamrocks GAA? Inter Kenmare FC? Kenmare Kestrels? C’mon, everybody! Get up there and get them out for a kick-around! Speak to Vlad if you’re shy. He’ll help to sort it out.

The Family Resource Centre is busy taking names of people who’d like to volunteer. Can you offer an hour a week to coach somebody with their English? Get onto the FRC and give them your name, their number is 064.6642790. One or two forms to fill out, that’s all it’ll take.

They need warm winter clothes and shoes too. And they’d like some kitchen stuff, pots and pans and cooking utensils would be great. Do you have anything you’d like to donate? You can drop stuff off to the Kenmare St. Vincent De Paul, from 11am – 4pm on Saturday, and 12 noon – 3pm on Sunday. Here’s the address:
Unit 50,
Sean Jones Storage Units,
Kilmurry (opposite the fish factory)

They also need “bathroom” items. Toilet paper, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shaving gear, shampoo, shower gel, sanitary towels, tampons – all of this stuff, if you could donate it, then they could save their “points” for other things.
If you’d like to donate these, you could drop them to me at Dr. Boland’s office on Shelbourne St. I’ll be there from 11am until 3pm tomorrow (Friday) and also on Saturday from 10am until 2pm.
My number’s on the wall outside if I’m not there, or you can text me on 087.76.36.332 and I’ll make sure that your donations are delivered to Atlantic Lodge with your best wishes.

I said this to Vlad earlier today, and I’ll say it again here. Irish people have been leaving their homes for centuries. We’ve gone to every country in the world. We know what it is to be displaced, to be outsiders, and we know what it feels like to be made welcome. Because we are made welcome everywhere we go. This is a chance for us to return the favour.
Thanks for reading, everybody.

Oh, what a night! Sunday Bank Holiday at PFs, where the Lovely Girls Competition 2018 raised hemlines, blood pressure, and - most importantly - funds for Rockmount Day Centre in Kilgarvan. Like it, share it, tag a Lovely Girl and start thinking about next year! This Bio Queen predicts a *stiff* competition....

It’s nice to see WM (Western Medical) Doctors becoming more open to Acupuncture.
Why not have a chat with your GP about it?
It might be right for you!

I had often heard of acupuncture as an alternative treatment for pain, but I had dismissed it. But I also knew that my patients deserved an alternative to opioids.
