During your session, if your physio thinks imaging will help clarify your diagnosis or guide your treatment, they can scan you right there and then.

Myth vs Truth: Dry Needling Edition 📍

Let's bust some common myths about dry needling once and for all!

❌ MYTH: "It's the same as acupuncture"

✅ TRUTH: Completely different! Acupuncture is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine and energy meridians. Dry needling is based on Western anatomy and targets specific muscles and trigger points.

❌ MYTH: "The needles are huge"

✅ TRUTH: They're incredibly thin - thinner than injection needles or needles used for blood draws. Check my recent video to see just how thin!

❌ MYTH: "It's really painful"

✅ TRUTH: Most patients are surprised by how comfortable it is. You might feel a small pinch and a brief muscle twitch, but it's not the pain people imagine.

❌ MYTH: "It doesn't actually work"

✅ TRUTH: Research shows dry needling is highly effective for trigger points and chronic muscle pain. It gets to problems other treatments can't reach.

❌ MYTH: "I'll be stuck like a pincushion for ages"

✅ TRUTH: The actual needling takes just 10-15 minutes as part of your full physio session. Needles don't stay in long.

❌ MYTH: "If I'm scared of needles, I can't do it"

✅ TRUTH: Many nervous patients become our biggest advocates! We go at your pace, show you everything first, and you stay in control.

The Reality:

Dry needling is one of the most effective tools we have for treating stubborn muscle pain, trigger points, and chronic tension.

Is it right for everyone? No.

Let me tell you what dry needling actually is 📍

I hold this unopened sterile pack in my hand almost daily - and I see the same nervous look every time.

'Is that going to hurt?'
'I don't like needles...'
'What even IS that?'

What is Dry Needling?

A technique where we insert very thin needles into trigger points - those tight, knotted areas in your muscles that cause pain and restrict movement.

It's called "dry" needling because there's no injection - the needle itself is the treatment.

How it works:

Releases tight muscle bands
Improves blood flow to the area
Reduces pain and inflammation
Helps restore normal movement

What it treats:

✅ Chronic muscle pain & tension
✅ Trigger points (those painful knots!)
✅ Sports injuries
✅ Tension headaches
✅ Lower back pain
✅ Shoulder and neck problems
✅ Stubborn issues that haven't responded to other treatments

What to expect:

Small pinch when needle goes in (often barely noticeable)
Brief muscle twitch when we hit the trigger point (that's good!)
Some mild soreness after (like a deep massage)

The needles?

Thinner than you think! Much thinner than injection needles.

Are you at risk for osteoporosis?
Let's check 📋

Honestly answer these questions:

☐ Are you over 50?
☐ Do you live in Ireland? (Vitamin D deficiency is real here! ☔)
☐ Are you post-menopausal?
☐ Do you sit most of the day?
☐ Do you rarely do weight-bearing exercise?
☐ Do you have a family history of osteoporosis?
☐ Have you had a previous fracture?
☐ Do you smoke or drink heavily?
☐ Are you on certain medications (steroids, etc.)?
☐ Do you avoid dairy or have low calcium intake?
