Graded Motor Imagery is a progressive program designed to expose the brain to movement related therapies and sequentially activate parts of the brain and improve brain reorganisation in three steps - Laterality training, Motor Imagery and Mirror Therapy. Functional MRI studies have found activation in various parts of the brain as a result of each component of the program. Mirror Box therapy uses movements of the unaffected limb to "trick" the brain into thinking that the affected arm is moving. Researchers have found that this tricking of the brain stimulates areas of the brain that have been affected and helps to rebuild brain pathways.

just thought I would share an email I received this evening..

Dear Bernie, You may remember I spoke to you a few weeks ago and subsequently got a Graded Motor Imagery Pack from you. I have been suffering with CRPS in my wrist for the past 2 years. Well here I am 4 weeks on and I cannot get over the effect this simple program has made to my condition. My pain levels have dramatically dropped. My pain used to be about a 9/10 on the pain scale. Now I would probably give it a 2/10 and I am now experiencing times where there is no pain. I suppose I am amazed that this treatment isnt offered to everone with CRPS. It makes perfect sense that the brain needs to be reprogrammed if there is constant pain signals all the time.
Thank you for your help and for getting me started.

According to an internationally known neuroscience researcher speaking on May 17th at the American Pain Societys Annual Conference, Training the brain to reduce pain is an exciting and emerging approach for the treatment of chronic pain conditions such as Phantom limb pain and CRPS.Dr. Lorimer Mosely expalined how Graded Motor Imagery helps to rewire the brain and remap areas that are altered as a result of pain and stroke.

We use Graded Motor Imagery for the treatment of pain and stroke by applying a tailored program of therapy.Graded Motor Imagery has been a hugely significant step forwards in the way we approach pain as it targets the brain and the changes that occur in the the brain as a result of persisitant pain and injury.Graded Motor Imagery has been shown to be effective for the treatment of:
Stroke
Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)
Phantom Limb Pain
Neuropathic pain
What is Graded Motor Imagery?
GMI is a three stage programme that sequentially targets the processes that underpin normal movement. It consists of:

1.Laterality
2.Motor Imagery
3.Mirror Therapy
