Are you using Levemir? Are you aware that the drug manufacturer Novo Nordisk has announced it will discontinue Levemir insulin in all forms worldwide, and it will not be available in Ireland by the end of 2026 anymore?

The HSE has prepared an information leaflet for people who have been using Levemir to manage diabetes – see the guidance here and contact your diabetes team for further information and plan the next steps, if needed.

If you have the Drugs Payment Scheme (DPS) card, you pay a maximum of €80 a month for any approved medicines and certain medical appliances that you and your family need🙌

Your family includes:

✔️Your spouse or partner
✔️Your children under 18 or under 23 if they’re studying full-time
✔️A family member with a disability

You can apply for a DPS card online at mydps.ie or apply by post. To get the paper form, you can:

✅Download it from the HSE website
✅Call 📞 0818 22 44 78
✅Visit your Local Health Office

You’ll need to give some personal info when applying, including:

✔️ Full name, address, gender, date of birth and contact details of you and relevant family members
✔️ PPS numbers for you and your family
✔️ Proof of your address (like a bill)
✔️ Proof your children are in full-time education if they are 18-23

🛒 When you register for the DPS, you get a swipe card for each person you applied for. You show this card at the pharmacy when you collect your medication.

Hospital under major pressure

University Hospital Kerry is currently facing a significant and escalating surge in winter illnesses, particularly respiratory conditions.
Hospital management said activity levels are now exceptionally high, driven by multiple compounding factors while the Emergency Department is experiencing far higher attendances than normal.
The hospital is appealing to the public not to attend the Emergency Department unless emergency care is required.
Those with non‑urgent needs are asked to seek support from pharmacists, GPs, SouthDoc or the Injury Units in Mallow or Bantry to help ensure emergency services remain available for those who need them most.
Damien Moyles, Operations Manager at University Hospital Kerry said: “We must take care of the sickest people first”.
He added that staff in the Emergency Department prioritise patients in terms of clinical need and, at the moment, wait times for non-urgent care may be lengthy.
Everyone arriving to the department is clinically assessed and seen in order of priority, so anyone with non-urgent presentations will be waiting a long time.
As always, anyone with an urgent or emergency care need should attend the Emergency Department but anyone with a less serious condition should review all their other options.
