"As the days grow shorter and the beautiful Christmas lights brighten the streets with color and joy, I pause to savor the meaningful awareness that happiness is always available to us, no matter what is happening around us.
I don’t need to change what I see or hear in order to feel good. I don’t need to change you or your mood to be happy. My job is to nurture my own well-being and joy, regardless of external circumstances. It isn’t your responsibility to adjust your behavior so that I can feel enthusiasm and appreciation for life when we interact. The world doesn’t have to be perfect for me to be okay.
At any moment of the day, I can choose to focus on the emotions I want to experience. I train my mind to turn toward thoughts that calm me when I’m anxious, reassure me when I’m worried, lift me when I’m sad or discouraged, and spark excitement when I’m feeling apathetic.
I am not, nor will I ever be, a victim of life, because I am the one who decides how I want to feel and which emotions I choose to cultivate."
